Enterobiasis (code ICD10 - B80)

Enterobiasis is contact anthroponous helminthiasis, manifested by perianal itching, dyspeptic disorders and neurotic reactions (especially in children).

Causative agent: Enterobius vermicularis, heterosexual round helminths, a sexually mature female reaches a length of 1 cm (Fig. 36).

Distributed everywhere (most widely in developed countries of temperate climates, mainly among children). In Russia, it is the most common helminthiasis.

Features of epidemiology: contact helminthiasis, eggs ripen in the presence of air for 6 hours

Life cycle: when the eggs enter the intestines, the larva is exhausted, which turns into a sexually mature pinworm after 3 weeks; the female lays eggs in the perianal folds of the skin, after which she dies; pinworm life span 3-4 weeks

Human infection: fecal-oral mechanism; household contact route of infection through dirty hands (including self-infection), objects contaminated with pinworm eggs, toys, food

Localization of sexually mature forms: the lower part of the small and upper part of the large intestine

Clinic for intensive invasion: severe itching in the perianal region, scratching, allergic rashes in this area, moodiness, tearfulness, weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, sometimes diarrhea with mucus or constipation, sleep disturbance, headaches, dizziness , bedwetting, masturbation, decreased academic performance in schoolchildren, in severe cases - seizures, fainting.

Complications: vulvitis, cracks anus, paraproctitis. There are known cases of pinworms penetrating through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic area ( differential diagnostics with inflammatory diseases and tumors of the small pelvis).

Diagnostics: helminthoscopy, coproovoscopy (detection of eggs in a perianal scraping using adhesive tape) (Fig. 37).

Treatment: see table (Appendix 1)

Clinical examination: see table (Appendix 2)

Prevention: compliance with the rules of personal hygiene. Examination of children and staff at preschool institutions. Deworming of all family members, children's team and service personnel in the foci of enterobiasis. Sanitary education work.

What is enterobiasis? Forms of pinworm disease

Forms of enterobiasis

Disease enterobiasis what is it? The photo shows that the appearance of the disease is facilitated by small, milky worms. Helminthiasis, which they cause, can occur in two phases - acute and chronic.

How does acute enterobiasis proceed?

Acute enterobiasis is pinworms, worms that first entered the human intestine.

Incubation period enterobiasis lasts 48 hours, and the acute stage lasts about seven days.

The acute stage is characterized by certain symptoms:

  • nausea;
  • discomfort in the intestines;
  • itching in the anus;
  • persistent urge to defecate and frequent bowel movements.

Important! Itching in the anal area can occur not only with enterobiasis. This sign also indicates dermatological, fungal, bacterial diseases.

If the defeat of pinworms is large-scale, then the itching becomes unbearable, and it bothers a person not only at night, but also in the daytime. Severe forms of enterobiasis are accompanied by severe abdominal pain (right side), reminiscent painful sensations with appendicitis. At this stage of development of nematodosis, the patient has a high content of leukocytes in the blood.

Chronic enterobiasis

Chronic enterobiasis in adults is easier than in children. If the invasion is not large-scale, then pinworms can live in the intestines for more than one year, without particularly showing themselves. But worms constantly secrete toxic substances(products of their own vital activity), gradually poisoning the host's body.

Characteristic feature chronic stage helminthiasis - anal itching that appears periodically. Based on this symptom, a preliminary diagnosis can be made.

Chronic enterobiasis requires immediate treatment, since various diseases can develop against its background:

  • inflammation of the intestinal mucosa;
  • appendicitis;
  • the occurrence of eczema and cracks in the skin of the anus;
  • in women, pinworms lead to inflammation of the genitals.

You can learn more about enterobiasis by studying the document "International Classification of Diseases". It is the main classification and statistical framework in the health sector, which is revised every 10 years by WHO.

Enterobiasis: classification according to the ICD 10 code

In the International Classification of Diseases, helminthiasis caused by pinworms has the code B80. The code for microbiosis 10 enterobiasis, delivered to the patient on the sick leave, allows not only to find out what enterobiasis is in adults. Photos, videos and information in the electronic version of the ICD-10 are also based on the causes, symptoms, and the main methods of treatment for helminthiasis.

Pinworms: what are they and how to detect them

Reference: Pinworms cannot be infected from pets, therefore the main source of enterobiasis is an invasive person.

To from human body pinworms have been bred, the disease must be confirmed by diagnosis. There are several main methods for detecting nematodes:

Feces for enterobiasis: what is it? This diagnostic method consists in examining feces. For this, the biomaterial collected in the morning is placed in a special container and taken to a medical facility. Moreover, the feces should be taken from different areas, and in order for the results to be as accurate as possible, the sample must be taken to the laboratory in a few hours.

Important! To prevent urine from entering the feces, you need to empty your bladder before bowel movements.

Another way to diagnose enterobiasis is to take a scraping. The procedure is carried out immediately after waking up in the morning before emptying. Its essence is as follows: using cotton swab you need to run it over the skin around the anus, and then place the sample in a jar and take it to the laboratory. Also, duct tape can be used when taking a scraping.

Treatment and prevention

To remove pinworms from the body, antiglust drugs are prescribed, such as Pirantel, Vermox or Vormil. But such drugs are very toxic, so they should be taken in accurate dosage and only after a doctor's appointment.

Important! Treatment of enterobiasis can only be successful if all hygiene rules are followed to prevent re-infection.

Important! After 2 weeks, the course must be repeated and again tested for enterobiasis.

In order to prevent reinfection, a study for enterobiasis must be passed to all family members. Every day, the house where the infected person lives must be wet cleaned, and his bedding and underwear must be changed daily. After coming from the street and before eating, you should wash your hands with soap and water. Showering twice a day is also required.

In addition, the prevention of enterobiasis consists in observing the following rules:

  • Fingernails should be constantly trimmed and cleaned.
  • Doorknobs in the bathroom and toilet should be periodically treated with disinfectants.
  • Personal hygiene items, dishes and things of the patient (clothes, comb, pen) should not be given to other people.
  • It is undesirable for an infected person to swim in a bathtub, pool and open water.
  • Before eating fruits, herbs, berries and vegetables should be thoroughly washed.
  • The invasive person's linen should be washed at a high temperature followed by ironing.

ENTEROBIOSIS (ICD-10 code - B80

Widespread helminthic invasion from the group of small nematodes (up to 1 cm) with a predominant fecal-oral mechanism of infection when swallowing eggs of the worms, which can be found under nails, on bed linen, clothes, toys, household items.

The disease is manifested by severe itching. When scratching, eggs fall under the nails, are swallowed and dispersed in the environment.

The diagnosis is confirmed by the detection of eggs of worms in scrapings or sexually mature individuals in the feces.

Assign mebendazole 0.1 single dose, albendazole, pyrantel or piperazine adipate.

The main clinical symptoms of the acute phase of enterobiasis are abdominal pain, morning intestinal discomfort, nausea, and frequent bowel movements up to 4 times a day. These phenomena continue until days, the stool remains speeded up until the end of the invasion. The nature of clinical manifestations in the chronic phase is ambiguous. In some of the infected, enterobiasis proceeds without complaints, in the absence of clinical symptoms. The intensity of symptoms in the chronic phase of enterobiasis depends primarily on the intensity of invasion and the frequency of super- and reinvasion.

With a weak invasion, the main complaint is perianal itching, which occurs more often in the evening before bedtime, when falling asleep, and sometimes abdominal pain. After 2-3 days, all these symptoms disappear and, as a rule, recur every 3-4 weeks. This frequency is associated with the completion of the development of a new generation of helminths as a result of reinvasion.

With a more intense and prolonged invasion, perianal itching disturbs the invader not only in the evening and night hours, but also during the day. Abdominal pain intensifies, more often in the right ileocecal region, reminiscent of pain in appendicitis, tenesmus, flatulence, and loose stools occur. Unbearable itching disrupts sleep, becomes the cause of nocturia, masturbation. From the side of the hemogram, moderate leukocytosis is noted, eosinophilia of peripheral blood, which gradually increases in the early phase, reaches a maximum (23%) by 16 days, then gradually decreases by the end of the invasion to 4 - 5%.

Typically, neurological symptoms such as headache, dizziness, memory loss. Children often suffer, they become capricious, whiny, get tired quickly, and do not perceive useful skills well. The instability of attention, inability to concentrate reduces academic performance, in adults - the ability to work.

Enterobiasis has reliably bad influence on behavioral reactions and neuropsychic development of children preschool age... Cases of fainting and epileptiform seizures in children, causally associated with enterobiasis, have been described.

Severe complications of enterobiasis include appendicopathies and appendicitis, proctitis and paraproctitis, dermatitis and eczema of the perianal region with their characteristic symptoms.

The indisputable cause of painful vulvitis and vulvovaginitis in girls is often chronic enterobiasis.

M.G. Makarova found that enterobiasis causes a significant decrease in nonspecific immunity: the activity of salivary lysozyme (1.5 times) and the content of alpha-interferon (to a level of less than 2 units / ml), at the same time does not affect the content gamma interferon. These data are of particular interest in terms of establishing the causes of immunosuppression, which is especially common in children.

In conclusion, it is necessary to pay attention to the polymorphism of clinical manifestations, causally associated with enterobiasis, but characteristic of the most diverse organ pathology. This is what leads to the inevitable appeal of the invasive to doctors. different specialties: gastroenterologists, obstetricians-gynecologists, neuropathologists, allergists, dermatologists, urologists, surgeons and And only the correct orientation of such a specialist on the need to exclude enterobiotic invasion provides qualified assistance to the patient.

Causes

The name Enterobius comes from the Greek enteron - intestines and bios - life, vermicularis - reduced from Latin - a worm, a worm living in the intestine.

Pinworm is a small spindle-shaped nematode of white milk, the cuticle of which has a transverse striated.

The length of an adult female reaches 9-12 mm, in males, in the female, the tail end is pointed, in the male it is blunt and hook-shaped. Sharp lateral keels, running along the length of the helminth's body, form head vesicles at the anterior end. Digestive system the helminth is represented by the mouth opening, limited by three lips, a cylindrical esophagus with a bulbous expansion, passing into the intestine and ending in the anus in the back of the body.

Bulbus of the esophagus and vesicles form a suction apparatus, which provides fixation of adult helminths to the intestinal wall.

Pinworm eggs have an oblong, somewhat asymmetrical shape, one side is flatter. Egg size x hmm. They are covered with a thin double-contour colorless smooth shell.

Treatment

1. Enterobiasis is a disease of dirty hands, therefore, the cleanliness of hands and nails, the fight against the bad habit of biting nails, taking fingers in the mouth, washing hands with soap and water before eating are the basis of successful treatment;

2. Infected persons should sleep in closed underpants, ie with elastic bands not only around the waist, but also around the legs, change them daily;

3. Obligatory washing of the perianal area with soap and water at night and in the morning after sleep;

4. In the presence of itching in the perianal region, before going to bed, a soda cleansing enema is recommended; it is designed only for mechanical removal of worms from the rectum; calculation of baking soda - for an enema: 1/2 teaspoon per 1 cup of boiled room temperature water (garlic, milk-garlic, vinegar enemas are not recommended to be used, because they irritate the rectal mucosa);

5. Daily washing of the body, bathing in the shower;

6. Daily change of bed linen and ironing it with a hot iron is effective, but difficult to do, and if all of the above recommendations are followed, it is not necessary.

In the presence of an invasion in young children, it is recommended, after an evening wash at night, to lay a small cotton swab smeared with vaseline ointment in the anus. This prevents the creeping of female pinworms, relieves the child from itching, in women and girls it prevents pinworms from crawling into the vagina.

With the unconditional and high-quality implementation of these recommendations, the patient can get rid of the invasion without drug treatment.

However, the recovery of the invasive is carried out faster and more reliably if the complex is observed: drug treatment against the background of the sanitary and hygienic regime.

How to understand that you have enterobiasis?

Enterobiasis is one of the most common types of helminthiasis that affects adults and children, the causative agents of which are spindle-shaped white nematodes - pinworms (shown in the photo below).

Characteristics of helminthic invasion

Enterobiasis is often determined in infected "hosts" by the characteristic itching in the anal area, dysfunction of the intestines and an increase in the level of eosinophils in the blood, indicating the presence of an allergic reaction of the human body to toxic waste products of pinworms.

The mechanism of development of the disease

The only mechanism for the entry of worms into the body of adults and children is contact with a person with enterobiasis (the route of infection is oral).

Of particular importance in this situation, according to Dr. Komarovsky, are dirty fingers - pinworm eggs are often localized under the nails of infected adults and children.

  • the complete absence of symptoms - this is how the ailment code mcb 10 manifests itself in people with good immune function;
  • a clinically pronounced course of enterobiasis can proceed subclinically (in cases with non-intensive infection), and also take the form of intestinal, nervous or cutaneous enterobiasis (most often at the chronic stage of the disease).

In general, how enterobiasis will manifest itself depends on several factors:

During enterobiasis, acute and chronic phases are distinguished, each of them has characteristic symptoms... So, in the first case, helminthiasis manifests itself as follows:

  • acute pain in the lower abdomen;
  • periodic nausea;
  • frequent bowel movements (up to four times a day).

The clinical picture of enterobiasis at the chronic stage is ambiguous and polymorphic. In some patients with the disease code mcb 10, this phase of the disease is asymptomatic, almost imperceptible. In other situations, the course of helminthiasis is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • intense itching in the perianal region, aggravated at night;
  • enterobiasis causes abdominal pain of various etiologies.

With an intensive infection with a disease, the ICB code 10, according to Dr.Komarovsky, severe itching the perianal region can manifest itself not only at night, but also during the day. In addition, the patient has following signs diseases:

  • loose frequent stools;
  • sharp abdominal pains, reminiscent of those that occur with appendicitis;
  • helminthiasis microbial code 10 is accompanied by flatulence, diarrhea, decreased appetite;
  • a blood test (especially in women during pregnancy) shows moderate leukocytosis, eosinophilia;
  • in severe cases, helminthic invasion of the ICB code 10 causes neurological manifestations: memory loss, frequent migraines, dizziness, fatigue, general weakness, irritability and other forms of emotional instability.
  • appendicitis;
  • proctitis;
  • eczematous manifestations and dermatitis in the perianal region;
  • vulvovaginitis (especially in young girls and women during pregnancy).

It should be noted that with timely and correctly selected treatment of enterobiasis, its outcome is quite favorable, and there are no complications of the disease code ICB 10.

How to identify helminthiasis

To diagnose the disease, macroscopic techniques are used - they help to detect an individual pinworm in the patient's body and determine its gender. Of course, the main tool for detecting enterobiasis is a smear, which is taken from the patient's perianal area and examined for the content of helminth eggs.

Scatological technologies used to detect other types of helminthic invasions are inappropriate in a situation with enterobiasis - the female pinworm never lays eggs in the intestinal lumen.

If the appropriate diagnosis is made to the child, then the therapy of helminthic invasion is carried out with very gentle and slightly toxic antiglust preparations:

  • Mebendazole;
  • Pirantel.

The clinical effect of such drugs for the ailment code ICB 10 is as follows:

  • the active components of the preparations have a detrimental effect on eggs, larvae and sexually mature individuals of pinworms;
  • do not allow worms to "stick" to the intestinal mucosa;
  • violate metabolic processes in the body of helminths;
  • it is important that these medications are not absorbed into the baby's blood, thus, allergic reaction for such drugs is completely excluded.

In a situation with enterobiasis, prevention takes a very important place. To protect yourself from pinworms entering the body, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • since Dr. Komarovsky calls the disease code ICB 10 "the disease of dirty hands", first of all, you should keep your nails clean, not lick your fingers, be sure to wash your hands before eating food;
  • already infected patients should sleep in closed, well-fixed underwear on the body - this helps to protect against night scratching of the perianal opening and, accordingly, prevents pinworm eggs from getting under the nails;
  • every night before going to bed, it is necessary to wash the genitals and perianal area with warm soapy water;
  • cleansing enemas (for example, milk-garlic) are shown to minimize the symptoms of itching in the anal area; for the treatment of enterobiasis during pregnancy, such manipulations are not suitable;
  • it is necessary to change bed linen daily, pre-ironing it with a well-heated iron.

Dwarf tapeworm in the human body

  • helminths injure the intestines of the host, as a result - profuse blood loss, nutrients are not absorbed into the mucous membrane;
  • hymenolepiasis causes toxic-allergic syndrome - the immune response of the host organism to the waste products of the dwarf tapeworm.

Hymenolepiasis has no specific symptoms - clinical picture the disease is polymorphic and is characterized by signs characteristic of other forms of helminthiasis:

  • disruption of the digestive tract organs;
  • nervous disorders;
  • hymenolepiasis is accompanied by skin rashes;
  • increased body temperature, fever, etc.

Hymenolepiasis is usually treated with an essential extract of the male fern. The therapeutic course is long, divided into three stages with 12-day breaks between them. The dosage of the drug is as follows: 0.1 gram of the drug / year of the patient's life.

Treatment of ailment has its own logical sequence:

  • on the day before therapy, the patient must follow a strict diet (the patient is shown only low-fat food);
  • before going to bed - a saline laxative;
  • in the morning - a cleansing enema (you can - garlic and milk);
  • immediately after the procedure, the patient drinks the medicine, after an hour and a half - a saline laxative, after 2 hours you can have breakfast.

It is prohibited to treat hymenolepiasis with male fern extract:

  • during pregnancy;
  • people with anemia;
  • patients with chronic pathologies organs of the gastrointestinal tract or with ulcerative lesions of the stomach, duodenum.

With the right therapy, hymenolepiasis is completely cured.

Dr. Komarovsky claims that timely antiglust therapy helps children and adults get rid of pinworms and prevent possible complications enterobiasis (appendicitis, allergic manifestations, dermatitis or eczema in the perianal region).

Intestinal lamblia causes a serious disease of giardiasis. Throughout life, many people face such a problem, as evidenced by the presence of IgG antibodies in the blood against Lamblia intestinalis.

The intestines of giardiasis are quite common. Children are primarily at risk. International Classification diseases, that is, ICD-10 marks this ailment as A07.1.

Intestinal lamblia is the simplest organism that most often enters the body of humans and mammals. Giardia usually live in the intestines, but sometimes they are found in the liver. It is the only protozoan species found in the small intestine.

The life of Giardia can be divided into two stages: active life and the stage of cysts. Cyst is called a stable formation. In winter, they remain viable in water for two months. Cysts can withstand temperatures of 70 degrees for ten minutes.

Cysts are not destroyed by the action of gastric juice, and can migrate to duodenum... This is a favorite habitat for Giardia. Worms in this place begin to multiply actively.

For a long time, a person does not suspect what has got into his body. Most often, lamblia in the intestines are found when drinking contaminated water. It is not necessary to drink it, you can swim in contaminated water bodies or wash food with such water. Also, children are often infected in schools, kindergartens and entertainment camps.

Children often play in the sandpit and do not wash their hands afterwards. After the finger has been in the mouth, an infection with lamblia occurs. Also, infestation often occurs due to contact with infected people and animals.

Giardia can be infected by contact with surfaces in public places. We are talking about furniture, pens, pencils, doors and other common items.

The main symptoms of giardiasis

Giardiasis is divided into acute and chronic form... The symptoms are quite different. Acute giardiasis has the following symptoms:

  • Fever and chills
  • Increased body temperature
  • Painful sensations in the epigastrium,
  • Dermatological eruptions.

In many cases, giardiasis is confused with rubella or measles. A person with a helminthic invasion may also develop the following symptoms:

  1. Vomiting, stool problems,
  2. Weight loss up to anorexia.

Without timely treatment symptoms may go away, but the disease becomes severe chronic.

If a person's immunity is weakened, for example, a cold has recently been transferred, then the disease becomes acute. There are the following signs of chronic giardiasis:

  • General intoxication of the body,
  • Apathy, depression,
  • Hypovitaminosis, which affects the condition of the skin, hair, nails,
  • Stool disorder.

Periods of diarrhea are often followed by periods of constipation. In addition, there may be:

  1. Intermittent vomiting
  2. Cramping pain in the epigastrium,
  3. Peeling skin, especially the nose,
  4. Cracked skin
  5. Headache,
  6. Pain in the liver area
  7. Bitter taste in the mouth
  8. Yellow coating on the tongue
  9. Asmatics have an exacerbation of the disease.

Diagnostic procedures for determining giardiasis

There are methods that allow you to determine the correct diagnosis:

  • Stool analysis,
  • Endoscopic analysis of the duodenal surface,
  • CPR method,
  • Immunological studies.

Thus, several samples need to be taken at intervals of several days. In some cases, you need to take up to six samples in a row. However, more often than not, one analysis is enough to make the correct diagnosis.

If you carry out an endoscopic examination of the contents of the intestine, this will give a more detailed result. If the worms are in the lower or middle parts of the gastrointestinal tract, then the test results will be negative. Thus, there will be a need to pass a feces analysis.

The PCR method is characterized by an accurate result, but it is used mainly in laboratories. When using immunological methods, antibodies and antigens to pathogens are determined.

The material for the study is fecal matter.

Treatment of giardiasis

  1. Trichopolus,
  2. Tinidazole,
  3. Ornidazole,
  4. McMiror.

The effective dosage is determined by the doctor, based on the age and condition of the patient.

Trichopol

Trichopolum is traditional drug... The main active substance- metronidazole.

Children under 12 years of age are prescribed 375 mg of the drug twice a day.

For adults, the dosage is 0.5 g twice a day, which corresponds to two tablets of the drug.

There are contraindications for the use of Trichopolum:

  • Organic lesions of the central nervous system,
  • Blood diseases
  • Intolerance,
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages
  • Pregnancy.

The following side effects are distinguished:

  1. Vomiting, nausea,
  2. Diarrhea, constipation,
  3. Headaches, migraines,
  4. Depression, nervousness,
  5. Convulsions
  6. The urine is reddish brown.

Tinidazole

The main active ingredient of the drug is tinidazole. The dosage is calculated based on the age of the person. So, children are given 50-75 mg of funds per kilogram of body weight 1 time per day. Adults are prescribed 4 tablets per day.

McMiror

McMiror is complex tool, where there are antibacterial components of the nitrofuran group, as well as an antifungal component. In many cases, giardiasis is observed along with fungal infections.

Macmiror does not have a negative effect on liver function, the drug is excreted in the urine. The following treatment regimen has been established with McMiror: adults are prescribed two tablets three times a day for seven days.

Children under two months old need to calculate the dosage on an individual basis. The classic scheme is 15 mg of funds per kilogram of weight. You need to use the drug twice a day for a week.

  2. Medicines to improve digestion,
  3. Preparations for the regulation of intestinal microflora.

It is imperative to prescribe laxative medications to normalize bowel movements.

Preventive measures

It is important not only to get rid of worms, but also to prevent re-invasion. If you constantly follow the rules of personal hygiene, you can avoid infection. It is important to adhere to these rules:

  • Wash hands after using the toilet, outdoors, contact with animals,
  • Teach children to be acidic,
  • Process food.

Adhering to the rules of hygiene is easier and cheaper than getting rid of intestinal lamblia and other worms. If there is a suspicion of an invasion, you should immediately consult a doctor.

In the video in this article, the doctor will describe in detail the disease of giardiasis.

What is Babesiosis?

Babesiosis was first discovered in humans in the middle of the last century. Despite the fact that its distribution covers almost the entire globe, the disease can be attributed to fairly rare pathologies. This circumstance does not allow scientists to study the disease in detail, but the main mechanism of its origin and development is defined quite clearly. Babesiosis is difficult and can lead to dangerous complications, and therefore it is necessary to consult a doctor in a timely manner, and even better to take preventive measures to exclude infection.

The essence of the disease

In the process of destruction of erythrocytes, a number of pathological reactions develop:

Piroplasmosis is often combined with babesiosis, but despite the similarity in the manifestation of diseases, their complete identification is incorrect due to differences in the etiological mechanism. ICD-10 assigned a separate code B60.0 to pathology.

Etiology of the disease

Various types of babesia (more than 100 varieties) can cause babesiosis in humans. In this case, large animals are the main accumulator of infection, and rodents act as an intermediate host. The carriers of the infection are blood-sucking insects, most often ticks. They infect a person through their saliva.

The most common are the following types of pathogen:

  • Babesia divergens (the main host is cattle);
  • Babesia ovis (sheep);
  • Babesia canis (dogs);
  • Babesia odocoilei (deer).

In humans, as the main host, Babesia microti (mainly in the states of North America) and Babesia divergens (European version) settle. Argali, mouflons, fallow deer and a number of other mammals can serve as a natural reservoir for babesia.

The largest number of cases of infection is registered in Scandinavia, Germany, France, Poland, USA (east coast). In Russia, the maximum risk of infection is noted in the north-west of the country and in the southern regions of the European part.

From person to person, infection can only occur through blood. At risk of infection are:

  • tourists;
  • agricultural workers;
  • elderly people;
  • people with a removed spleen.

The development of babesiosis in humans actively begins only with a decrease in immune defense. With normal immunity, he can be a carrier of infection without even knowing it. Exacerbation of the disease provokes diseases associated with hormonal dysfunctions, diabetes mellitus and other pathologies.

Clinical manifestations of the disease

Babesiosis in humans can occur in mild and severe forms, and the nature of the course of the disease is largely determined by the condition immune system... The incubation period of the disease in case of infection from an insect bite is about 11-14 days. With direct hematogenous infection, this period can be reduced to 9-11 days.

The manifestation of the disease can be varied depending on the severity and individual characteristics of the organism. The most serious and characteristic features babesiosis are the following symptoms:

  • an unexpected rise in body temperature to 39.5–40 ° C;
  • rapid and intermittent breathing;
  • heart rhythm disorder;
  • weight loss.

As the disease progresses, the following symptoms appear clearly:

  • feverish condition;
  • fast fatiguability;
  • excessive sweating;
  • chills;
  • splenomegaly;
  • joint and muscle pain;
  • headache;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • painful sensations in the abdomen and throat;
  • photophobia;
  • cough;
  • general depression.

In medical practice, cases have been recorded when babesiosis acquired a chronic form. In this case, the central nervous system suffers quite strongly, which is manifested by pronounced mental disorders... In general, it should be noted that the manifestation of the disease depends little on the age of the patient, and the symptoms are similar in both children and adults. It is possible to single out only elderly people over 60 years old, who are characterized by a severe course of the disease and frequent combination of babesiosis with granulocytic ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease.

Lack of adequate treatment can lead to serious complications. A severe form of the disease can cause renal failure and dysfunction of many internal organs.

How is the disease diagnosed?

When babesiosis is determined, the diagnosis includes a study of the immune status and identification of the pathogen. Primary diagnosis is put on the basis of the analysis symptomatic manifestations... The following signs are taken as a basis: a prolonged febrile state, symptoms of anemia, the ineffectiveness of conventional antibacterial and antiviral drugs... In the history, special attention is paid to the place of residence or temporary stay, age and impaired immune character.

Confirmation of the diagnosis is provided by a blood test. The disease is recorded when babesia is detected in the blood with a diagnostic titer of at least 1: 255. Sometimes clarifications are carried out biological research by injecting blood taken from a patient into a golden hamster, in which the disease develops intensively. It is necessary to differentiate babesiosis from pathologies such as AIDS, malaria, and sepsis.

Extended studies include the reaction of indirect immunofluorescence (RIF), the use of xenodiagnostics. The most accurate results are obtained by PCR, with the help of which the DNA of the pathogen is determined.

How is the disease treated?

Unfortunately, babesiosis is a rather rare and not fully understood disease, and therefore there is no single principle of dealing with it. Treatment is carried out according to an individual scheme, taking into account the characteristics of the organism and the symptoms manifested. Light form the disease tends to self-cure, and therefore often intensive therapy is not required. In this case, you can be treated with common medicines that eliminate the most bothersome symptoms.

At severe course pathology needs serious complex treatment... In particular, the following therapy scheme is often used:

Treatment of the disease is difficult and requires significant efforts. All of this can be avoided by taking preventive measures of protection. This applies primarily to stay in places where livestock is often grazed (pasture), walks or outdoor recreation. If there is a danger of tick bites, you should stock up on closed clothing. The best protection against ticks is with special repellents. At the first signs of malaise after an insect bite, you must urgently go to a medical institution.

Babesiosis is serious illness, which can lead to serious consequences. To exclude infection, you must observe maximum vigilance in areas where there is an increased risk of tick bites. When a disease occurs, only timely treatment will be effective.
