Hawaii, Maldives, Caribbean - they are full of resorts, beaches, exotic fruits. But how corny it is! Golden sand, sun all year round, turquoise waves - who will you surprise? We will remember others - the most unusual islands in the world. Some of them are uniquely beautiful, others are mysterious, and still others are dangerous.

Giant ghost

Hashima (or Hashima) is an island in Japan, near Nagasaki. Before and during World War II, coal was mined here - thousands of Japanese and forced miners from China and Korea. When the country switched to oil as its main source of fuel, the island was deserted. Several massive concrete buildings remain on it, giving Hasima the appearance of an abandoned battleship. It is also called the ghost island.

Like a horror movie

One of the most unusual and terrifying islands belongs to Mexico. It is filled with dolls hanging from the trees. Therefore, this place is called the Island of the Dolls. Legend has it that Don Julian, who lost his family, heard screams - a woman was drowning in one of the many local channels. He did not manage to save the stranger, but in his nightmares he continued to hear her voice. To drive away the annoying spirit, Julian began to string dolls on branches, others followed suit. So the island became a legend, and then an eerie tourist attraction.

Here Tom Hanks spent his "exile"

There are many cute uninhabited islands in the world, what is the small island of Monuriki, belonging to Fiji, famous for? It's just that Zemeckis' adventure blockbuster “Outcast” was filmed here. It was on this tiny patch that the hero of Tom Hanks talked to his ball. The island is very popular with tourists.

Made from special cane

The floating islands of Lake Titicaca in Peru are something special! They are artificial, woven from dry Totora reeds by the local Uros tribe. First, a lot of rugs are made, then the mats are attached to each other with ropes. If earlier the representatives of the tribe lived off fishing, now they are rescued by tourists. When you step on such a reed island, it seems that you are just swinging on a wave and are about to go to the bottom, but in fact, the "carpet" is very strong.

Inhospitable land

North Vigil Island is one of the most isolated and most unusual on Earth. It is located in the Bay of Bengal, 32 km from Smith Island. Sentinel is 72 square kilometers, almost completely covered with forests (with the exception of thin coastal strips). Local residents do not want to contact anyone, they are very xenophobic and oppose any outside interference. If you approach the island by boat or helicopter, you will be attacked by a barrage of arrows. Very little is known about the culture and language of this people. By the way, one of the heroes of Conan Doyle's story "The Sign of Four", a savage who perfectly shoots from a pipe, was just from here.

The unearthly landscape of Socotra

The most beautiful and exotic island of our rating is rightfully the Socotra archipelago, which belongs to Yemen. The local flora and fauna are mostly endemic, you will not find amazing dragon trees anywhere else, and the "pot-bellied" bottle trees are so funny! Add to this the strange species of birds and absolutely fantastic landscape. It is not without reason that Socotra is compared to something alien, it seems that she was fantasized by some eccentric artist.

Uninhabited rocky reserves

Haiti and the United States are fighting for Navassu Island, which annexed it to their territories in 1857. The entire coastline of Navassa is solid steep cliffs, so it is impossible to moor on the island by boat. Moreover, this is a nature reserve, and you can get there only with a special permit. The uninhabited island is only 48 km away from Haiti, and 145 km from the Guantanamo Strait.

Howland Island is located in the Pacific Ocean north of the equator. It belongs to the United States, and at one time, guano (seabird droppings) were mined here in large quantities. Now it is uninhabited and is a natural reserve. During World War II, Howland was attacked by Japanese bombers - the day after the Pearl Harbor tragedy. The island keeps the secret of the disappearance of the pilot Amelia Earhart without a trace. She was supposed to land here on a continental flight, but did not reach the island - her plane could fall into the ocean or suffered a disaster, crashing against the coastal rocks.

In the kingdom of the Snow Queen

The northernmost airport and northernmost church in the world, as well as one of the northernmost settlements in Longyearbyen Land, are located in the Svalbard archipelago, which is part of Norway. A polar bear attack should be feared here, so travelers usually carry a rifle with them. It is on this island that a huge seed storage is organized - to preserve biodiversity in the event of a large-scale natural disaster.

The volcanic island of Bouvet is located 2500 km southwest of South Africa. It is small (49 sq. Km) and is almost completely covered with a thick crust of ice, and the shores are solid sharp sheer cliffs. Bouvet was a British territory, and then the authorities of the country transferred it to Norway. A nature reserve, Bouvet has never been inhabited. Why was it included in our ranking of the most unusual islands in the world? Because it is considered the most remote on the planet. The nearest land (Queen Maud Land in Antarctica) is 1750 km away.

Seychelles beckons with its pristine nature. Very often from tourists you can hear the opinion that the Seychelles is an earthly paradise. This "earthly paradise" is located in tropical latitudes and is washed by the clear azure waves of the Indian Ocean. The rich underwater world of the Seychelles attracts a huge number of divers, and the luxurious white beaches and comfortable hotels, surrounded by colorful vegetation, attract those who want to take a break from the bustle of the city and find spiritual harmony with nature.

The Seychelles are magnificent not only for their rich outlandish vegetation and a vibrant underwater world, but also for a large number of birds. The famous giant tortoises also live here. Once upon a time, pirates found refuge here, and today it is a favorite place for lovers of exotic recreation. At the same time, the beauty of rest in the Seychelles is that here you can completely get away from the world and bustle, since even with great popularity, the Seychelles did not become a victim of mass tourism.

The weather in the Seychelles is rather tropical and mild. This means that good, sunny weather with a slight breeze reigns here almost all year round. December and January are considered rainy seasons, although there is very little rainfall. The best time for a holiday in the Seychelles is the month of May and October-December.

Choosing a vacation in the Seychelles, tourists can settle in both bungalows and low-rise hotels that do not have an official star rating. Usually, the stars are assigned to them by the tour operators themselves, and at the same time, hotels in the Seychelles are able to provide complete comfort and coziness to any tourist. Almost all hotels are located on the first line. Umbrellas and sun loungers for vacationers are provided free of charge.

There are almost no historical sites on the Seychelles. The only attractions of the Seychelles are nature reserves, magnificent natural beaches (in places of pale pink color), rich flora and fauna. As such, there is no entertainment in the Seychelles either. Exceptions are the casino at the Plantation Club on Mahe Island, the Berjaya Beau Vallon Casino, the Lovant Club in the capital of Victoria and a few small, fun places. Instead of the vibrant nightlife on the islands, however, events such as the many festivals (such as the Creole Culture Festival) take place throughout the year.

The Seychelles also hosts various sporting events, such as the Grand Regatta. In the Seychelles, you can also go surfing, the most convenient islands for this are Mahe and Praslin. The Seychelles do not leave indifferent those who like to fish. And for shopaholics on the island of Mahe, there are large shopping centers and various shops. On the small islands, there are mainly small shops with smiling sellers.

Citizens of Russia and the CIS do not need a visa to Seychelles, provided that vacationers stay in the country for no more than 30 days. The visa is issued on the spot, upon arrival at the international airport "Pointe Larue" (on the island of Mahe). You must have your passport, return ticket and hotel reservation with you.

Almost all types of transport run on the islands. Buses and taxis operate on Mahe Island. Travel between the 115 islands of the archipelago using regular Air Seychelles flights or numerous ferries and schooners.

TripAdvisor annually produces a ranking of the most best islands in the world. This year was no exception. Moreover, it should be noted that this rating is based not on traditional "expert" assessments of the editorial staff, but on the basis of recommendations and feedback from visitors to this interesting portal.

This year, the rating was topped by the island of Providenciales in the Caribbean, and only two representatives of past laureates remained in the top ten - the Thai Tau and the famous Bora Bora. And this fact should not surprise anyone, since the tourist market is difficult to predict and it is simply impossible to predict which particular destination will become popular this year.

Coral Paradise - Providenciales Island

This largest island in the Caribbean archipelago is part of such a little-known state as the Turks and Caicos. The state is a continuation of the Bahamas, so it is not surprising that its islands are characterized by the same features for a luxurious vacation - white sandy beaches, a mild climate that allows you to relax all year round, turquoise waters and magnificent nature that creates beautiful scenery for walking.

However, the main reason for the island's frequent hits in various ratings is not the usual snow-white beaches familiar to everyone, but a variety of recreation. This is facilitated by how warm sea waters and picturesque coral reefs, which can be easily reached from the shore on their own.

This island is often called romantic, but unlike most of the "paradise" ocean islands, which received their title due to the wild nature and white beaches, Santorini received this title thanks to the houses carved into the rocks, which, with their snow-white facades and bright blue roofs, attract tourists from all over the world. ...

Unlike most of the islands on the list, people come to Santorini not for diving or extreme entertainment, but to kindle a real fire in loving hearts. And most of the tourists are newlyweds, whom the island pleases with its unforgettable romance and positive.

Flamboyant diving on Tao Island in Thailand

The waters of the Gulf of Thailand have sheltered the cozy Tao Island, or Turtle Island, shaded by palm trees. The island got its name due to the numerous colonies of sea turtles, which have chosen its white sandy beaches. Once the island was uninhabited and only turtles were its only inhabitants. The white sand and azure clear water around the island cannot but amaze tourists, who, like the majestic reptiles many centuries ago, have now chosen these beaches.

However, this resort island is famous not only for its snow-white sandy hills and sunny 300 days a year, allowing lazy sunbathing on the beach. However, the island attracts most tourists with its underwater beauty.

It is diving on Koh Tao that is the most popular type of outdoor activity. Coral reefs are rich marine life, more than 30 dive sites of various categories of difficulty, including wrecks and a short distance to diving sites - all this makes Koh Tao the "Mecca of Diving" of Southeast Asia.

The island, like most of its neighbors, was formed after a chain of volcanic eruptions and is now a mountain range with three peaks piercing the sky over a dazzling blue lagoon.

Paradise holidays on the beaches of Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha is the name of an archipelago located near Brazil, and consisting of more than twenty islands. However, inhabited and, accordingly, the most popular of this cohort is the largest island, which attracts all beach lovers. In addition, this archipelago has been included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List for fifteen years, since it is in its waters that large populations of dolphins, sea turtles and cetaceans live.

However, it is worth it - the cove around the beach is a real natural treasure. The bay is a natural pool surrounded by solidified lava, in which the water is always crystal clear.

The islands have always been considered romantic places. Songs are written about them, couples in love dream of retirement on some abandoned piece of land in the ocean. The island became the home of the famous Robinson Crusoe. Some of these places are riveted by everyone's attention. The island of Ibiza has become the most popular holiday destination; for the sake of the Serpent Island, Romania and Ukraine are engaged in political disputes.

But there are some rather extreme places that are attracted by this. After all, remoteness from life makes the islands an excellent place either for the preservation of unique flora or fauna, or for unique objects of human activity (mines, prisons, etc.). They even say that each of them has some kind of secret. We will tell below about the most unusual islands that attract tourists and explorers.

Izu Islands. When planning to visit these islands, do not forget to grab a gas mask. The archipelago is located south of Tokyo, in the Pacific Ocean. One of the local islands, Miyakejima, is of particular interest to visitors. The fact is that the Oyama volcano is located here, which has woken up 6 times in the last century alone. Magma is constantly boiling under the island. This is the reason that the world's highest natural concentration of sulfurous gases in the air. The content of toxic substances in the air sometimes became so high that the local population was even evacuated. This is exactly what happened in 2000, when sulfur sensors simply went off scale. After 5 years, some daredevils were still allowed to return home. Today they run their household on the island, and do the usual things for the Japanese. But the residents are obliged to constantly have a gas mask with them, being ready to put it on at any second. An automated warning system has been set up on the island. As soon as there are more sulfurous gases in the air permissible norm, a loud siren starts to sound, forcing people to wear masks. Residents are ready for a piercing howl to be heard at any time of the day. Fast application gas masks is already a natural thing, incapable of disrupting even the holiday. The island may look like a post-apocapical place, but tourists still visit it. After all, if you do not smell the area and accept the fact that the command to wear a gas mask can be heard at any moment, then here you can admire the gorgeous nature for a long time. There are many dolphins around the island, and it is interesting to dive with scuba diving here. Gas masks have become the pride of the island; they can be purchased in souvenir and tourist shops. At the same time, you can choose any color and size to choose from.

The island of floating pigs. In the Bahamas, there is the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay. Its fame is based on the fact that a whole herd of feral pigs lives here. They are fed by specially hired residents of neighboring islands, in addition, the pigs get a lot of food from tourists. People come to see this miracle of nature from afar. On the island itself there is a small hotel where you can leave your things by going on an excursion. On a boat, tourists swim along the coast. Seeing a person, the pigs rush into the water, swim to him, begging for food. How can you resist? And if the boat runs aground, then the pig can generally unceremoniously climb aboard and eat whatever it sees fit. However, the local pigs are quite friendly. They prefer to endure the heat of the day in the forest, appearing on the beach in the late afternoon. After all, then both the air and the water already become cool.

The island of chemical rabbits... The Japanese island of Okunoshima is also called Usagi Shima, which means "rabbit island". This little piece of land in the ocean has a dark story of its own. When Japan signed the Geneva Protocol on the Prohibition of the Use of Poisonous Gases for Military Purposes in 1925, the plant on the island continued to operate. Mustard gas was produced here. As a result, the local factory produced more than 6 thousand tons of mustard gas. The secret location was chosen very well - with geographic maps it was simply erased, and no satellites then flew over the planet. Hazardous production was stopped only after the Second World War. The victims of the plant were local rabbits, on which chemical weapons were tested. After the plant was shut down, the animals were released. On the island, they did not have natural enemies, so the eared animals multiplied, becoming the real masters of Okunoshima. In 1988, the plant was converted into a museum, tourists began to visit here. They are met and escorted by rabbits whose ancestors were subjected to cruel experiments. The Japanese, as if feeling guilty, are very fond of local animals. It should be noted that the island is also home to the country's highest power transmission pylon. Therefore, local rabbits are not only chemical, but also electrified.

A stumbling block. Rockall Island in the North Atlantic is so small that it's embarrassing to call it a rock. Its height is 29 meters, its length is 31 meters, and its width is 25 meters. It is only natural that such a place is uninhabited. And who would need it? Nevertheless, it turned out that four European states have territorial claims to this place at once. The Rockall Island dispute is ongoing between Ireland, Denmark, Iceland and the United Kingdom. The reason is simple - there are supposedly significant reserves of natural gas and oil under a lonely rock in the ocean. The entire volume is estimated at $ 160 billion. Rockall first appeared in the press in 1904, when a Norwegian steamer crashed nearby. The tragedy claimed the lives of 600 people. Until 1955, Rockall remained forgotten. Suddenly, one day a British military helicopter flew on it, the soldiers hoisted the flag of the United Kingdom on the island. The British were afraid that the Russians might occupy the island before them and set up an observation post there. In 1972, the island officially became part of Scotland. Rockall was not interested in anyone until 1997. When it became clear that the area of the island contains a lot of hydrocarbons, Greenpeace activists landed on Rockall. They quickly declared the land independent, giving the new country the name of Wavelandia. Even 15,000 passports were printed for the citizens of the new state. By 1999, the funds of the environmentalists were depleted, the rocky settlement had to be removed, and the project was closed. Since then, for Rockall, called the loneliest island in the World Ocean, an irreconcilable struggle of the mentioned states has been waged. After all, each of them dreams of gaining independence from Russia and Norway in matters of gas and oil supplies. There is no end in sight to controversy.

The most remote island in the world. This is Bouvet Island, named after its discoverer. It is located between South Africa and Antarctica. The island is uninhabited as it is covered with ice. But he has his own domain zone on the Internet - "bv". The island became famous with the help of the movie "Alien vs. Predator". After all, the main action takes place in a fictional dungeon just under this deserted ice island. That's the nearest place where people live, 1404 miles from here. The nearby island of Tristan da Cunha, with a population of 271, has cafes, cars and even the Internet. But on Bouvet Island, only animals live - pinnipeds, penguins and sea pizzas. Of the plants, there is only lichen and moss. It is impossible to land on the island from the sea; you can get here only by helicopter. In 1964, a passenger ship was found near Bouvet. All people left it, and the stocks of food and alcohol remained intact. Where all the passengers and crew have gone remains a mystery. In 1979, a bright flash was recorded on the island. It was suggested that it was an atomic explosion carried out during joint tests of South Africa and Israel, but no official information was received. Perhaps a large meteorite fell on the island. Since 1927, the island has been considered a territory of Norway, it has been given the status of a nature reserve. Sometimes scientists come here to study the migrations of whales. But not a single person has yet lived here during the coldest season.

The island of poisonous snakes. To the south he is Sao Paulo, not far from the coast of Brazil, in the ocean lies the island of Keimada Grande. It looks like a heavenly place, it is not touched by man. But there is a simple explanation - the whole island is just teeming poisonous snakes... The population density is so high that there are from one to five of them per square meter. The snakes feed on migratory birds that stop on the island in search of rest. Probably, it is this island that should rightfully be called the Serpent, and not the one in the Black Sea. Local reptiles reach a length of a meter. They are called island botrops or golden cinquefoil. The bite of such snakes is dangerous - in 90% of deaths in Brazil from snake bites, it is the botrops that is to blame. The creatures are so deadly that a patrol of the country's naval forces is constantly on duty near the island, not allowing anyone to approach the island of Keimada Grande. Only a couple of times during the entire time, scientists and the film crew of the Discovery TV channel managed to visit the island. And I can't believe that once the Portuguese colonialists planned to grow bananas here.

Monkey paradise. Monkeys live in many places, but one Caribbean island inhabited by them is simply their paradise. Near the coast of Puerto Rico is an uninhabited piece of land of Cayo. There, in 1938, 409 rhesus monkeys were released. The animals, which are sacred to the Hindus, quickly became accustomed to the closed world. Today, there are already 940 individuals on the island. Animals, unknowingly, are the subject of study by the University of Puerto Rico. The employees take care of the macaques, conducting humane experiments on them. After all, even a long simple observation of our distant relatives can provide a lot of useful information. Only a scientist can get to the island to communicate with monkeys. Anyone can watch the monkey paradise. To do this, you just need to rent a boat. You can even see animals swimming in the ocean, because they are not afraid of water.

Spitsbergen. The island is the largest in the Svalbard archipelago. It is located north of Scandinavia in the Arctic Ocean. Svalbard officially belongs to Norway. The local city of Longyearbyen is the northernmost settlement with over a thousand inhabitants. Moving around the island itself is dangerous - a polar bear can attack a person at any moment. That is why the law obliges everyone to take a firearm with them. Svalbard became famous for the UN initiative. Thanks to her, the World Seed Vault was created on the island. It stores samples of seeds of the main agricultural plants at low temperatures, which can be useful in the event of some kind of global disaster.

North Sentinel. North Sentinel Island is located in the Bay of Bengal, 32 kilometers west of Smith Island. Its area of 72 square kilometers is almost entirely covered with dense forests. The exceptions are several coastal sandy beaches. A mysterious tribe, the Sentinelians, was discovered on the island. They are extremely energetic in resisting any contact with civilization. Aliens are even threatened with death in an unnecessary desire to get closer to the natives. Such a reluctance to contact scientists, as well as the difficulty of exploring the island itself, has led to the fact that today practically nothing is known about the tribe. Researchers can only guess what language is used by the locals, what is their culture. It is not even clear how many of them live on the island. Although North Sentinel is officially part of the Andaman Islands, the local government has long left the island alone, giving it virtually autonomy.

Saber Island. This island, unusual in many ways, is famous mainly for the fact that it slowly moves across the world's oceans. Moreover, the direction was chosen strictly to the east, and the speed of movement is about 200 meters per year. Scientists are unable to explain the nature of such a phenomenon. After all, the island is the top of a seamount located on a tectonic plate. The movement of the island must mean its movement. However, usually the slabs are displaced by only a few millimeters during the year. Outwardly, the island actually resembles a saber, or an octopus tentacle. If the length of the Saber is 42 kilometers, then the width is only one and a half. The Canadian island stretches from west to east, and it is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 110 kilometers southeast of Halifax. Scientists at the beginning of the 20th century discovered a strange pattern - Western part Sabers are constantly under the influence of strong waves and currents. This leads to the destruction of the rocky coast. But the opposite part is always calm. Where did the sandy deposits come from remains a mystery. As a result, the size of the island remains unchanged, on the one hand, the island collapses, and on the other, it grows due to sand. A couple of dozen scientists are constantly living on the Saber. They keep an eye on meteorological equipment, beacons and a radio station. Another feature of the island is the constant terrible weather on it. Only in July can ships approach Sable, and even then mooring to the shore is complicated by shoals, rocks and reefs. Tourists are not allowed to come here, the territory itself is a nature reserve. However, the Government of Canada may give special permission for a photographer or researcher to come here.
