14.01.2022 Preparations

Omez is a well-known drug in Russia, both by doctors and patients. Often comes across in the treatment of various diseases of the stomach. Despite the fact that, guided by the instructions for use, peptic ulcer disease is indicated in the annotation, the complex is also prescribed for other gastrointestinal ailments associated with high acidity, for example, heartburn.

What is Omez

Omez is an anti-ulcer drug from the Indian manufacturer Dr. Reddy's, a generic based on the active substance - Omeprazole.

New packaging, produced since 2018. On the left, when viewed from a certain angle, one of the authenticity protection systems, the inscription OMEZ, can be seen. Above is the title in Braille.

Belongs to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The most common group in the treatment of gastric pathologies, drugs are taken to suppress secretion, primarily in specific parietal cells that are responsible for the formation of hydrochloric acid. Thus, a decrease in the level of acidity of gastric juice is achieved. As a result of a decrease in the aggressiveness of the environment, the regenerative processes of the gastric and esophageal mucosa (with GERD) are intensified, and damage is healed.

The decrease in acid production does not depend on the nature of the stimulus.

Varieties of release forms

Instructions of different forms are almost identical, with small differences. The main indication for all is peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum.

  • Omez. Enteric capsules are available in dosages of 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg. It is worth noting that the minimum dosage is dispensed without a doctor's prescription, the rest are prescription.
  • Omez D. It differs from the usual one in that in addition to the main anti-ulcer component in the composition (omeprazole), a prokinetic agent, domperidone, has been added. It has an effect on smooth muscles, namely, improves the functioning of the stomach, removes, normalizes the tone of the entire gastrointestinal tract. Available in 10 mg of both substances. Assign with concomitant pain in the intestines, flatulence, heartburn caused by reflux.

This combination has been proven to be justified for many reasons. In most patients with gastritis and ulcers, dyspeptic symptoms and belching are observed, which are caused by impaired motor function, which makes it advisable to take PPIs and prokinetics simultaneously.

  • Omez DSR. Similar to Omez D, contains other dosages, domperidone 30 mg + omeprazole 20 mg. Since the substances are enclosed in sustained-release granules, a high dose of domperidone replaces one standard dose of 10 mg three times a day. It is released by prescription, prescribed by a doctor in severe conditions when a special approach is required. An increased amount of prokinetic allows you to take capsules with reflux esophagitis (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

  • Omez insta is intended for people with impaired swallowing function, or simply for those who are more comfortable drinking a diluted medicine than swallowing a large capsule. It has a pleasant minty taste, corresponds to 20 mg. Not recommended for diabetics due to sucrose content.
  • Lyophilisate for intravenous administration. Strictly a hospital variety, it is prescribed in ampoules when oral administration is impossible or the need for precise control of the concentration of a substance in the blood is necessary. Diluted in 100 ml of 5% glucose or water for injection, only freshly prepared solutions are used.

Omez is not available in tablets, its release form is called long-acting capsules.

Indications for use

A powerful antisecretory effect causes a list of diseases in which an indication of omez is possible:

  1. Gastritis with high acidity and peptic ulcer.
  2. Gastroesophageal reflux (especially form D and DSR).
  3. Symptomatic treatment of heartburn.
  4. Erosive esophagitis.
  5. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How to take

As written in the official instructions of Omez, the effect begins to appear after 15 minutes and reaches its peak after two hours. The duration varies greatly depending on the individual, usually up to 24 hours, which makes a single dose per day sufficient. Maximum efficiency occurs on the fourth day of use. The formation of hydrochloric acid returns to its previous level after a few days of withdrawal.

An important feature of the correct treatment with omeprazoles is its strict administration 30-60 minutes before meals, and the first meal. What is difficult, but it is necessary to achieve, to maintain the effectiveness of drug therapy. The problem is particularly acute, given that not all adults eat breakfast at all, which makes it impossible to properly take Omez.

Classic Omez and soluble Insta can be taken according to indications for a long time (years) without consequences, and Omez D, like DSR, is forbidden to take for a long time.

Side effects

Like many chemically synthesized drugs, Omez has side effects, but some of them are so rare (1 in 1000-10000) that it makes no sense to dwell on them. An overdose of the drug was not observed.

Consider the most common ones:

  • Headache.
  • Violation of the digestive tract (constipation, diarrhea).
  • Insomnia.

With short courses of treatment, no significant adverse effects have been identified.

Cautions

With alarming symptoms (severe weight loss, frequent vomiting), as well as with a diagnosed ulcer, it is necessary to undergo an endoscopic examination aimed at excluding a malignant tumor. Treatment with Omez can hide the symptoms, thereby preventing the timely detection of a dangerous disease. It is forbidden to take with pain in the stomach of unknown origin.

Reduced secretion of hydrochloric acid inevitably leads to a change in the absorption of some drugs. This applies to iron preparations, antifungals. A decrease in the effectiveness of Plavix (Clopidogrel) has been noted. Decreased bioavailability of cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12). The growth of abnormal microflora and the risk of developing intestinal infections increase.

Caution is necessary if you have to use Omez along with antibiotics, it is possible to increase the concentration of omeprazole in the blood, which increases the likelihood of side effects.

The risks of ischemic stroke with long-term use are currently being studied.

During clinical studies, it was found that to reduce the risks from long-term use, it is necessary to: prescribe probiotics and prevent infectious diseases, avoid alcohol, control calcium and magnesium intake, and regularly examine bone density.
