In the story of Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin "Yu-yu", the author-narrator acquaints the reader with the history of his pet, the cat, Yu-yu.

The story is told to the girl Nina, and the story begins with an appeal to her. The narrator explains how nickname Yu-yu how she ended up in the house, how she grew up and turned into adult cat... Leading the story about Yu-yu, the author is constantly distracted by his little listener, makes comments to her. Her behavior (Nina twists the ear of Bobik's puppy) prompts the narrator to deviate from the main narrative. He explains to the girl that animals are much smarter than people used to think; that people do not pay attention to those character traits of animals that are really inherent in them.

Among others, the narrator cites donkeys as an example - they are not so stupid and stubborn; horses - they are sensitive and not obstinate when handled correctly; geese - these are caring and smart. After this digression, the author returns to stories of Yu, describes her character. A cat is endowed with those traits that people are usually not inclined to attribute to animals - keen attention, imperiousness, self-esteem. Yu-yu's "rituals" are described in detail: morning awakening, drinking from a tap, night vigil next to the writing author. The history of the illness of Petit - the smallest member of the family - and the devotion of the cat, which lay at the door of his room during the whole time of the boy's illness, is retold in detail. The final episode - this boy's departure to a sanatorium, Yu-yu's melancholy and Petya's refusal to talk to her on the phone. After that, the story suddenly (from the point of view of composition) breaks off, and it is very briefly reported that Yu-yu soon died, and her owners got themselves another cat.

The story teaches readers to be sensitive and attentive to animals, listen to their desires and try to understand their character in the same way as a human.

And it's very funny when a family of goose deigns to walk. Ahead is he, master and protector. From the importance and pride, the beak lifted to the sky. He looks down on the whole poultry house. But the trouble is for an inexperienced dog or a frivolous girl like you, Nika, if you don’t give way to him: immediately it will snag the earth, sizzle like a bottle of soda water, open a hard beak, and the next day Nika walks with a huge bruise on his left leg, below the knee , and the dog is still shaking his strangled ear. And the whole family is a goose - exactly like a good German surname on a festive walk.

Or take a horse. What do they say about her? The horse is stupid. She only has beauty, the ability to run quickly and a memory of places. And so - a fool, a fool, moreover, that she is short-sighted, capricious, suspicious and unattractive to a person. But this nonsense is said by people who keep a horse in dark stables, who do not know the joy of raising it from a foal's age, who have never felt how grateful the horse is to the one who washes it, cleans it, drives it forging, gives water and feeds it. Such a person has only one thing on his mind: to mount a horse and be afraid lest she kick, bite, or throw him off. It would never occur to him to refresh the horse's mouth, use a softer path on the way, drink moderately in time, cover with a blanket or his coat in the parking lot ... Why will the horse respect him, I ask you? And you better ask any natural rider about a horse, and he will always answer you: there is no one smarter, kinder, nobler than a horse - of course, if only it is in good, understanding hands.

So, in Ancient Greece was a tiny town with a huge city gate. On this occasion, some passer-by once joked: look vigilantly, citizens, outside your city, otherwise he, perhaps, will slip away through this gate. Yu-yu slept in the house where she wanted. When the house began to wake up, her first business visit was always to me, and then only after her sensitive ear caught the morning clear childish voice that was heard in the room next to me. Yu-yu opened the door that was not tightly closed with her muzzle and paws, entered, jumped onto the bed, poked my pink nose in my hand or cheek and said briefly: "Murrm". She jumped to the floor and, without looking back, walked to the door. She did not doubt my obedience.

I listened. He dressed hastily, went out into the dark corridor. Glittering with yellow-green chrysolite eyes, Yu-yu was waiting for me at the door leading to the room where a four-year-old young man usually slept with his mother. I brought it up. A slightly audible grateful "mrm", an S-shaped movement of a dexterous body, a zigzag of a fluffy tail, and Yu-yu slipped into the nursery.

There is a ceremony of morning health. Yu-yu never begs. (Thanks meekly and cordially for the service.) But she studied the hour of the boy's arrival from the meat-house and his steps to the finest detail. If she is outside, then she will certainly wait for the beef on the porch, and if at home, she runs towards the beef in the kitchen. She opens the kitchen door herself with incomprehensible dexterity. It happens that the little boy digs for a long time, cutting off and weighing. Then, out of impatience, Yu-yu catches his claws on the edge of the table and begins to swing back and forth, like a circus performer on a horizontal bar. But - in silence. The little boy is a cheerful, ruddy, laughing rotozy. He passionately loves all animals, and he is in love with Yu-yu. But Yu-k "does not even allow him to touch himself. A haughty look - and a leap to the side. She is proud! She never forgets that in her veins flows blue blood from two branches: the great Siberian and the sovereign Bukhara. The boy for her is just someone who brings her meat every day. She looks at everything outside her home, outside her patronage and benevolence with regal coldness. She graciously accepts us. I loved to obey her orders. For example, I am working on a greenhouse, thoughtfully pinching off extra shoots from melons - a big calculation is needed here. Hot from the summer sun and warm earth. Yu-yu approaches silently. "Mrum!" It means, "Go on, I'm thirsty." I unbend with difficulty. Yu already ahead. Will never turn back on me. Do I dare to refuse or slow down? She leads me from the garden to the courtyard, then to the kitchen, then along the corridor to my room. I politely open all the doors for her and respectfully let her go ahead. Coming to me, she easily jumps onto the washbasin, where the living water is conducted, deftly finds three anchor points for three paws on the marble edges - the fourth on the weight for balance, - looks at me through my ear and says: "Mrum. Let the water go."

I let a thin silver trickle flow. Gracefully stretching out his neck, Yu-yu hastily licks the water with a narrow pink tongue. Cats drink occasionally, but for a long time and in large quantities. Yu and I had special hours of calm family happiness. This is when I wrote at night: the occupation is quite exhausting, but if you get involved in it, there is a lot of quiet joy in it. You scratch, scratch with a pen, suddenly some very necessary word is missing. Has stopped. What silence! And you will shudder from a soft elastic push. It was Yu-yu who easily jumped from the floor to the table. It is completely unknown when she came.

Scratches, scratches the feather. By themselves, okay, awkward words come by themselves. Phrases are built in obedient variety. But my head is already getting heavy, my back hurts, my fingers begin to tremble right hand: just look, a professional spasm will suddenly grumble them, and the feather, like a sharpened dart, will fly across the room. Isn't it time? And Yu-yu thinks it's time. She has long invented amusement: she watches carefully the lines that grow on my paper, leading her eyes to the pen, and pretends to herself that I am releasing small, black, ugly flies from him. And suddenly he slammed his paw on the very last fly. Strike marks and fast: black blood smeared on the paper. Let's go to bed, Yu-yushka. Let the flies sleep until tomorrow too. Outside the window, you can already make out the dull outlines of my dear ash tree. Yu-yu curls up at my feet, on the blanket. Yu-yushkin's friend and tormentor Kolya fell ill. Oh, his illness was cruel; it is still scary to remember her. It was only then that I learned how incredibly tenacious a person is and what enormous, unsuspecting powers he can discover in moments of love and death.

People, Nick, have many common truths and current opinions that they accept ready-made and will never bother to check them. So, for example, out of a thousand people, nine hundred and ninety-nine will say to you: "A cat is an egoistic animal. It is attached to housing, not to a person." They will not believe, and they will not dare to believe what I am about to tell you about Yu-yu. You, I know, Nika, believe me! The cat was not allowed to see the patient. Perhaps this was correct. Will push something, drop it, wake it up, scare it. And it did not take long to wean her from the children's room. She soon realized her position. But on the other hand, she lay down like a dog on the bare floor outside, at the very door, burying her pink nose in the crack under the door, and so she lay all those dark days, absenting only for food and a short walk. It was impossible to drive her away. Yes, and it was a pity. They walked through it, going into the nursery and leaving, pushed it with their feet, stepped on its tail and legs, sometimes threw it away in a hurry and impatience. It will only squeak, give way and again gently, but persistently returns to its original place. Until that time, I had neither heard nor read about such feline behavior. To which doctors are accustomed not to be surprised at anything, but even Dr. Shevchenko once said with a condescending grin:

You have a comical cat. On duty! This is funny ... Ah, Nika, for me it was neither comical nor funny at all. Until now, I have in my heart a tender gratitude to Yu-yu's memory for her bestial sympathy ... And what else was strange. As soon as in Colin's illness, after the last severe crisis, a turning point for the better came, when he was allowed to eat everything and even play in bed, the cat, by some particularly subtle instinct, realized that the empty-eyed and noseless had moved away from Colin's headboard, snapping its jaws in anger. Yu-yu left her post. Long and shamelessly she slept on my bed. But at the first visit to Kolya, she did not find any excitement. He crumpled and squeezed her, showered her with all sorts of affectionate names, even called her out of delight for some reason Yushkevich! She deftly wriggled out of his still weak hands, said "mrm", jumped to the floor and left. What an endurance, not to say: the calm greatness of the soul! ..

(the cat was about to talk on the phone)

But she was going to. Listen, Nika, how it happened. Kolya got out of bed thin, pale, green; lips without color, eyes sunken, little hands through the light, slightly pinkish. But I already told you: great strength and inexhaustible - human kindness. They managed to send Kolya for correction, accompanied by his mother, two hundred miles away to a beautiful sanatorium. Yu-yu, with the departure of her two friends - a big one and a small one - was in anxiety and bewilderment for a long time. I walked around the rooms and kept sticking my nose in the corners. Will poke and say expressively: "Mick!" For the first time in our longtime acquaintance, I began to hear this word from her. What it meant like a cat, I don’t presume to say, but from a human point of view it sounded like this: "What happened? Where are they? Where have they disappeared?"

And she looked at me with wide-open yellow-green eyes; in them I read amazement and a demanding question. Our telephone was located in a tiny hall on a round table, and beside it was a straw chair without a back. I do not remember in which of my conversations with the sanatorium I found Yu-yu sitting at my feet; I only know that it happened at the very beginning. But soon the cat began to resort to every phone call and, finally, completely moved its place of living to the front hall.

People generally understand animals very slowly and with difficulty; animals - people are much faster and thinner. I understood Yu-yu very late, only when one day, in the midst of my tender conversation with Kolya, she silently jumped from the floor onto my shoulders, balanced herself and stretched her fluffy muzzle with alert ears forward from behind my cheek.

I thought: "The hearing of a cat is excellent, at least better than that of a dog, and much sharper than a human." Very often, when we returned from the guests late in the evening, Yu-yu, recognizing our steps from a distance, ran out to meet us behind the third cross street. So she knew her people well. And further. We had a friend, a very restless boy Zhorzhik, four years old. When he visited us for the first time, he annoyed the cat very much: he ruffled her ears and tail, squeezed her in every possible way and ran around the rooms with her, squeezing her across the belly. This she could not stand, although in her usual delicacy she never let go of her claws. But then every time later, when Zhorzhik came - whether it was in two weeks, in a month or even more - it was only necessary for Yu to hear the ringing voice of Zhorzhik, which was heard even on the threshold, as she headlong, with a plaintive cry, ran to save herself: in the summer she jumped out in the first open window, in winter it slipped away under a sofa or under a chest of drawers. She certainly had a good memory.

"So what is so tricky about, - I thought, - that she recognized Colin's sweet voice and reached out to see: where is her beloved friend hidden?"

I really wanted to check my guess. That same evening I wrote a letter to the sanatorium with detailed description cat behavior and very much asked Kolya that the next time he spoke to me on the phone, he would certainly remember and say into the receiver all the old affectionate words that he had spoken to Yu-yushka at home. And I will bring the test tube to the cat's ear. Received an answer shortly. Kolya is very touched in memory of Yu and asks to give her a bow. He will talk to me from the sanatorium in two days, and on the third they will gather, pack up and go home. Indeed, the next morning the phone informed me that they would talk to me from the sanatorium. Yu-yu stood next to him on the floor. I took her on my lap - otherwise it would have been difficult for me to handle two pipes. Colin's cheerful, fresh voice rang out in a wooden rim. What a lot of new impressions and acquaintances! How many household questions, requests and orders! I barely had time to insert my request:

Dear Kolya, I will now put the telephone receiver to Yu-yushka's ear. Ready! Tell her yours pleasant words... - What words? I don’t know any words, ”the voice said boredly. - Kolya, dear, Yu-yu is listening to you. Tell her something sweet. Hurry up. - I don’t know. I don’t remember. And you will buy me an outdoor bird house, as here they hang from our windows? - Well, Kolenka, well, golden, well, good boy, you promised to talk to Yu. - Yes, I do not know to speak the cat's way. I can not. I forgot. In the receiver, something suddenly clicked, grunted, and the harsh voice of the telephone operator came from it: "You can't talk nonsense. Hang up. Other clients are waiting." A light knock, and the phone hiss died away. So ours did not work out with Yu experience... It's a pity. It was very interesting for me to know if our smart cat or not to the tender words familiar to her with her gentle "murrum". That's all about Yu-yu.

Not so long ago she died of old age, and now we have a cat-mutter, a velvet belly. About him, my dear Nika, another time.

Kuprin's story "Yu-yu" was written in 1927. Alexander Ivanovich, who was very fond of animals, dedicated many of his works to them. Among them was a kind fairy tale about a smart, cute kitty Yu-yu.

main characters

Yu- a beautiful proud cat, but at the same time loving and very loyal.

Other characters

The narrator- writer, owner of Yu-yu.

Kolya- a four-year-old boy, the son of a writer, friend and tormentor of Yu-yu.

Kolya's mother- the writer's wife, a kind, gentle woman.

When a small "fluffy lump with two cheerful eyes and a white-pink nose" appeared in the house, a three-year-old boy uttered "Yu-yu" in surprise. Since then, the whole family has just called for a new pet.

The kitten enjoyed lapping milk from a saucer, rolling on the floor, playing with a piece of paper or a ball of thread, "catching flies on the window with his paw." But very quickly this playful fluffy lump turned into "a big, slender, proud cat, the first beauty of the city." Her shiny dark brown fur with "fiery spots", white shirt front on the chest, long mustache and incredibly fluffy tail could not leave anyone indifferent.

But the most remarkable thing about Yu-yu was her character. She felt like a full-fledged mistress in the house, and slept where she wanted: “on sofas, on carpets, on chairs, on the piano over and above the music books”.

In the morning, she invariably visited her master, affectionately poking her pink nose into his hand or cheek. Then she moved to the nursery, where four-year-old Kolya slept with his mother. Yu-yu repeated the "morning health rite" and fondled tenderly towards the boy.

However, the cat was incredibly proud and only allowed herself to be stroked by a select few. None of the servants in the house dared even touch the haughty beauty. She never begged, just waited patiently for her portion of fresh meat to be given to her. The writer, a kind and sensitive person, always fulfilled her orders with pleasure: he let water in a thin stream in the tap so that Yu-yu could get drunk, or covered her with a newspaper when she wanted to fall asleep for an hour or two.

Once "Yu-yushkin's friend and tormentor Kolya" fell seriously ill. The cat was not allowed into the nursery, but all this time she lay on the floor outside the door, only occasionally absenting only "for food and a short walk." Yu-yu was constantly pushed, stepped on the legs and tail, but she courageously endured such an attitude, and did not give up her watch.

When the threat had passed, and the boy was on the mend, Yu-yu, with some unknown instinct, realized this, and for days on end shamelessly slept on the master's bed.

After his illness, Kolya was "thin, pale, green." To recuperate the boy, accompanied by his mother, was sent "to a beautiful sanatorium," with which he maintained a telephone line.

With the departure of her two friends, Yu-yu "was for a long time in anxiety and bewilderment." When she heard their voices from the telephone, she firmly established herself in this place and reacted violently to every phone call.

The writer asked his little son to say something affectionate on the phone next time especially for Yu-yu, but the boy became capricious, and the telephone operator disconnected them.

Yu-yu lived a long life by cat standards in the writer's house and "died of old age."

Conclusion

With his work, Alexander Kuprin calls to love animals, take care and try to understand them better. Loving and infinitely loyal, they are capable of being man's best friend.
