- David Lvovich, at one time you lived only in the USA, where you moved in 1994, and now?
– Mostly on the plane (smiles). I live in two houses, but more often I am in Russia.
– Where do you feel most comfortable?
“They remember me here, they love me. Dozens of my students all over the country, it's hard not to meet them. And few people know David Rudman in America. What, however, also has its own charm - it is not necessary to wear a formal suit and tie every day.
– You seem to be in excellent fighting shape, for you look much younger than your years. What's the secret? Do you continue to play sports?
No, just exercise.
– And more specifically?
- There is no definite system. Usually this is a ten-minute exercise in the morning and a visit to the fitness club twice a week. Thirty minutes brisk walking along the treadmill. Then I go around different simulators, I try to load all muscle groups, I work with a weight of 70% of the maximum. When I come to Moscow, I go to the pool. It seems that there are no flaws in my figure?! (Laughs.)
– Still would! How many times can you pull yourself up on the bar?
- Thirty times for a bet. But I prefer to do several approaches - depending on how you feel. If it is good plus the mood is in order, then I can do five repetitions of 10-15 times. The main rule that I always try to adhere to is to listen to your body, not to overload the body.
– Do you allow yourself alcohol sometimes?
– In reasonable doses. For example, a glass of red wine. By the way, I have never abused alcohol and I don’t remember a single case in my life that I was drunk.
– And in the past, sports years? Let's say, after a difficult, serious victory, didn't they really relax?
– Half a glass of beer at most. A whole glass of guts no longer accepted. I was asked the question: “David, don’t you drink? Oh well. You haven't been to Georgia." And here you are! USSR Championship in Tbilisi. The final duel in the city circus filled to capacity. I meet with a Georgian athlete, and, of course, all the fans cheer against me. But, to their regret, I became the winner then. After the competition, a farewell banquet. 200 people were present at it, many eminent, famous people, and not only from the world of sports. The table was full of snacks and drinks. They ask me what I'm going to drink. I noticed that most of those who were sitting next to me preferred cognac. I named this drink. They poured me a glass, and according to the local custom, toasts began, one after another: for the mother who gave birth to all of us, breast-fed, and raised us. For my father... Coach... Relatives... Friends... I brought the glass to my lips, but I didn't even taste the cognac. Suddenly, the toastmaster with a Georgian accent turns to the guests, while looking at me disapprovingly: “Stop, stop, out of the blue here! Wednesday we are eaten by a guest who does not drink. Everyone looked in my direction. I confess, I felt uneasy. Then I stood up and said: “I don’t drink at all, and if I bother you, I can leave, but I would not want to, because I respect you all, and this table too.” And he heard in response: “Okay, it’s empty here, it’s full, let him not drink, maybe he’s got something wrong.” Later, when I told my friends that I was in Georgia and did not drink, few people believed in it.
– David Lvovich, there is such an opinion: “Sport does not heal, but cripples” ...
- I do not know. I have never trained as hard as many thought. Only three times a week for two hours. But for training lost at least 2.5 kg. He came to the gym, shook hands with a sparring partner. We went to the carpet. I, in order to warm up well, first played with him, allowing him to conduct some kind of reception. The task was to wear down the opponent, to "drive" him. And when the opponent "ate" and was no longer able to continue the fight, I took the next opponent, who was heavier than the previous one. During training, I changed my partner more than once or twice, without breaks for rest. Over time, he complicated the task, began to set himself the goal of holding a certain number of painful holds for all fights: 10, then 15, 20, in the end he brought this figure to 50.
– David Lvovich, did you have to use self-defense without weapons in some everyday situations?
- Yes. During my student years in the Kuibyshev (Kuibyshev renamed Samara. - Auth.) Construction Institute, I was the commander of the Komsomol operational detachment. Our detachment confiscated about two dozen firearms and a couple of hundred knives a year. I will not hide, sometimes I had to use force.
– What is your attitude towards women involved in SAMBO?
- Great for women!
– No doubt…
“But seriously, I think so. Everything that distinguishes a man and a woman is good, but what brings them together is not very good. When a man becomes effeminate and a woman becomes masculine, this is called hermaphroditism. On the other hand, sambo enables the weak to defend themselves against aggression. So why not give a woman such a right? From this point of view, sambo can rightfully be considered a purely female sport. Is not it? (Laughs.)
– Tell me, is sambo popular in the USA?
– Certainly, but not to the same extent as in Russia. I remember one funny episode 10 years ago. Once in Las Vegas, a passer-by, seeing the inscription “Combat Sambo” on my cap, exclaimed inquiringly, dancing: “Dancing? Dancing?" (from English - dance, dance? - Auth.). To which I replied: “No? Self-defence ”(self-defense. - Auth.). Now, after the high-profile victories of Fedor Emelianenko, the Americans no longer react to my headdress in this way. They also know that sambo is Russia's calling card.
– David Lvovich, tell us about your family.
- Dad, thank God, is alive, he is 93 years old. I have two sons, two grandsons and two granddaughters. All live in New York.

- And how will Putin perceive this idea? Do you remember how he fought as a simple athlete?
No, I do not remember. Let me remind you, I was then already a six-time champion of the Union, I lived in Moscow. And Vladimir Vladimirovich was just beginning. So I had no chance to see him and remember him.
But he remembers you. Still, you were called the “king of the stalls” ...

In general, yes. Painful holds really were my signature. I most often won by transferring the fight to the ground. However, to be honest, I was good in the rack. But, most likely, those techniques that brought you the first successes are remembered. When no one knew you yet. Then, in the mid-60s, it really turned out most of all in prone wrestling. And won accordingly more at the bottom.
- They say that you had your own training system?
I set myself the task of training - first ten painful ones per training session, then twenty, then thirty. And he reached fifty pain points per workout. He didn't leave until he had fulfilled his "plan". And time was limited!
- Is it true that many surrendered to you when you did not even have time to make your crown submission.
It used to. The fact is that a painful hold is, first of all, the correct capture of an opponent. And when he realizes that he cannot escape, there is nothing left but to slap the carpet, recognizing himself defeated.

It is a question or a statement?
It is a fact. And the question is that the 27-year-old multiple champion of the USSR David Rudman at the peak of his career decided to go not even to coaching, but to experimental work with children. What for?
I wanted to. I always dragged everyone with me to sambo. At the institute, he attracted the entire group to training, created a section. I wanted to create a school in Kuibyshev in 1967. But it didn't. But in Moscow it worked.
- Yes, it so happened that almost every fifth champion in sambo and judo is a student of "Sambo-70".
The result is nothing. No, of course, it's great that hundreds of champions have grown up in our school. It is very important. But it is no less important that over the years at Sambo-70 we have brought up tens of thousands of healthy people. Healthy both physically and mentally.
- That is, the result was not asked from you?
They asked. But I said: there are 1,000 children in our school (and now there are 4,000). If we prioritize the result, then in the ideal case, ten people will become champions. What about the other 990s? And I managed to convince the team of teachers and coaches that the creation of a team united by the idea of SAMBO is more important than the result.
I always told the class at the first lesson: one of you will become the world champion, two or three will be champions of the Union. Three more will get into prize-winners. But all of you will get here friends for life, friends who will always come to your aid.
- Handsomely. And what, this thesis works even now, in market conditions?
Works. For example, the absolute world champion in judo Alexander Mikhailin is being trained by a graduate of Sambo-70 Valentin Khabirov. He became a coach, but everyone, absolutely all of his classmates help him. They live by the same idea, help each other.

I already knew everything, I was getting bored. I can't do that. And I went into business. And then, I really wanted to understand whether my work would be continued. It's one thing to work to death and not see how everything falls apart after you. Another thing is to pass everything on to your students and look from the outside. When you, in which case, you can come back and fix everything.
- Was there such a moment?
Was. I then offered to head the school to Renat Laishev, my student. He asked: do you want to be the director of Sambo-70? He replied: “David Lvovich, this is the dream of my whole life ...” And I am glad that Renat managed to preserve all the traditions that were laid down by us. "Sambo-70" is still known throughout the country. There are no fewer students, branches of the school are opening all over Russia. Yes, and Renat Alekseevich himself grew up both as a leader and as a teacher. He defended his Ph.D. and is preparing to defend his doctoral thesis. Every year I visit Sambo-70 and see that my work has not died, the building has not collapsed. And so, then, in the late 80s, I did the right thing.

Well, ok, as they say in New York. Everything really flows and changes. In your time, there were no girls at the Sambo-70 school, and many of your graduates joke that they lived a monastic life. Now women's judo has the same rights as men's. How do you personally feel about women's wrestling?
I don't understand the word "equality". Generally. People are all different. This is the first. Second: there can be no equality between a man and a woman. Everyone has their own purpose on earth. For example, I can't give birth. No matter how much I train, no matter how much I fight for this right, I will never learn this art. It's a certain functionality. Defined by nature. For a woman, this is the most important purpose, as for a man, the ability to protect and feed his family.
As for the fight, I don't want to say that I am against or for women's wrestling. When I was a student, I organized a sambo section. There were four girls in the group who asked: let's teach! I took it upon myself to train them. Taught self defense. In the summer they went for potatoes and a drunken man stuck to one. She gave him a reception, and in front of everyone he knelt down and asked for forgiveness. It had such a resonance that all the girls from the institute came running to me. I tell them that I don't do women's sambo. That is, he divided the entire beautiful half into two unequal ones - “my group” and “not mine”. But seriously, I believe that any desire has the right to life. If a girl wants to do SAMBO, let her do it. Sambo, by the way, is more feminine than masculine.
Women have less strength, and sambo is self-defense. And women need to study the art of sambo more. A man can give with his fist without receiving, and that's it. As for women's judo, it has its own aesthetic. But when a woman begins, say, to engage in classical wrestling or, even worse, to lift the barbell, I treat this, to put it mildly ... in my own way. I turn off the TV.
- How do you assess the prospects of our team?

We all win in sambo.
- But it happens that we win, and the crisis is approaching ...
In sambo, I feel uplifted.
- How do you evaluate the latest successes in judo? What awaits us at the Olympics?
I cannot say that I am 100% in control of the situation in judo. But I like the position of the president of the federation, Shestakov. Before him, they said: we are judoists, and you are sambists. Although, if you remember how judo began, then the gap between our species went “on the live”. All today's judo coaches are sambists. They have the psychology of a sambist. The psychology of a winner. And as long as everything went on “old leaps and bounds”, we won. As soon as the judoists forgot where they came from, they began to lose. Sashka Mikhailin - he is also from SAMBO. And Vladimir Shestakov correctly said: we cannot discard SAMBO, this is our heritage. And as far as I know, the President of the Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev and the President of the Judo Federation have now concluded a friendship agreement. We again stopped dividing into judoists and sambists and decide general tasks. And this happened for the first time since 1972. An Olympic medal is possible not with division, but with rallying to solve a problem.
Nevertheless, many grumble that an athlete who competes in both SAMBO and judo often misses something in preparation, cannot concentrate on one type…
Who is this many? Are you talking about a specific person? Schedules of departures, competitions, trainings, fees should be made by the coach and the athlete. I'm talking about a trend. On friendship between species in general.
- That is, the main thing is to plan clearly ...
We pay too much attention to words: a training plan, this and that ... I once talked with Vasily Alekseev, our famous weightlifter, in the bathhouse. He had 72 world records. I say: Vasya, what are your plans? And he: my plans are a hundred world records. That's all. When there is an increase in the “preparation plan”, “schedule” ...
- But it's part of modern sport.
Well, well ... All these questions are an attempt to justify their defeats, their professional failure.
I'll give you an example. Once we were preparing for the World SAMBO Championships at the same base with the players. So Beskov forbade cleaners to vacuum the corridors after dinner. It prevented the football players from sleeping! Journalists were not allowed in - they prevented them from tuning in. And in our building they cleaned up in the middle of the night, and journalists - at least around the clock. It ended with the fact that we brought nine gold medals. The players failed miserably at the same time, losing everything that was possible. And Beskov says: “The reason for the failure is that we were not provided with the proper conditions, we did not meet the schedule, we did not fulfill the plans ...”
- And yet, David Lvovich, are you a sambist or a judoka?
Are you going to pee me? How - in half? By the way, I also play the piano... What if I'm also a good chess player? We are accustomed to hang a single label on a person. And the person himself decides what to do, who to be.
- And sambo, in your opinion, is a spectacular view?
Undoubtedly. It's important to find a way. For example, at sambo competitions, you need to give up three carpets in one hall. The spectacle is lost. You cannot watch three hockey matches or three performances at the same time.
- What sport would you exclude from the Olympic program so that sambists get to the Olympics?
Yes, the Olympics is a political concept. An artificially invented, beautiful, politically important event. When there were games in Atlanta or Salt Lake, except for these cities, no one in the USA knew that they had the Olympics. I was in Atlanta, I went with my son to watch the fight. So what? I saw the open championship of the Soviet Union. All of us fought for different countries. There were "stands". Wrestlers from Yakutia at the Olympics-96 fought for five countries ...
- Do you think judo is a national idea in Japan?
Each country has its own national idea in the field of self-defense. Japan has judo, Korea has taekwondo...
- But in Russia?
Sambo. And there is no other! Born in Russia, right? We don't attack anyone until we're touched, right? Nationally? Nationally. We recognize all types of national wrestling, they are included in sambo. In a word, the main thing is not to formulate an idea, but to develop it. Train daily. Then the idea becomes something more than just words.
