White Fang
Summary of the story
White Fang's father is a wolf, his mother Kichi is half wolf, half dog. He doesn't have a name yet. He was born in the Northern Wilderness and was the only surviving brood. In the North, people often have to starve, and this killed his sisters and brothers. The father, a one-eyed wolf, soon dies in an unequal battle with a lynx. The cub and the mother are left alone, he often accompanies the she-wolf on the hunt and soon begins to comprehend the "law of prey": eat - or they will eat you yourself. The wolf cub cannot articulate

His, but simply lives by him. Besides the law of prey, there are many others that must be obeyed. The life playing in the wolf cub, the forces that control his body, serve him as an inexhaustible source of happiness.
The world is full of surprises, and one day, on the way to the stream, the wolf cub stumbles upon creatures unfamiliar to him - people. He does not run away, but falls to the ground, “shackled by fear and ready to express the humility with which his distant ancestor went to a man to warm himself by the fire he had made”. One of the Indians comes closer, and when his hand touches the wolf cub, he grabs it with his teeth and immediately gets hit on the head. The wolf cub whines in pain and horror, the mother hurries to help him, and suddenly one of the Indians shouts imperatively: "Kichi!" once again there was a famine. The fearless mother-wolf, to the horror and amazement of the wolf cub, crawls to the Indian on her belly. Gray Beaver becomes the master of Kichi again. He now owns the wolf cub, to which he gives the name - White Fang.
It is difficult for White Fang to get used to a new life in a camp of Indians: he is constantly forced to repel the attacks of dogs, he has to strictly observe the laws of people whom he considers gods, often cruel, sometimes just. He realizes that "the body of God is sacred," and never again tries to bite a person. Arousing only one hatred among his fellows and people and always at enmity with everyone, White Fang develops quickly, but one-sided. With such a life, neither good feelings nor the need for affection can arise in him. But in agility and cunning no one can compare with him; he runs faster than all other dogs, and knows how to fight angrier, fiercer and smarter than they. Otherwise, he will not survive. During the change of the camp site, White Fang runs away, but, finding himself alone, he feels fear and loneliness. Driven by them, he searches for the Indians. White Fang becomes a sled dog. After some time, he is put at the head of the team, which further increases the hatred of his brethren, whom he rules with fierce inflexibility. Hard work in the harness strengthens White Fang's strength, and his mental development is completed. The world around is harsh and cruel, and White Fang has no illusions on this score. Devotion to man becomes a law for him, and from a wolf-cub born in the wild, a dog is obtained, in which there is a lot of wolf, and yet it is a dog, not a wolf.
Gray Beaver brings several bales of furs and a bale of moccasins and mittens to Fort Yukon, hoping for more money. After assessing the demand for his product, he decides to trade slowly, just not to sell too cheap. At Fort, White Fang sees white people for the first time, and they seem to him to be gods with even greater power than the Indians. But the customs of the gods in the North are rather crude. One of the favorite pastimes is the fights that the local dogs start up with the dogs, who have just arrived with the new owners on the steamer. In this occupation, White Fang has no equal. Among the old-timers there is a man who especially enjoys dog fights. This is an evil, pathetic coward and freak, nicknamed Handsome Smith, doing all the dirty work. Once, having drunk Gray Beaver, Handsome Smith buys White Fang from him and with the most severe beatings makes him understand who his new owner... White Fang hates this crazy god, but is forced to obey him. Handsome Smith makes a real professional fighter out of White Fang and arranges dog fights. For the hated, hunted White Fang, a fight becomes the only way to prove himself, he invariably comes out the winner, and Handsome Smith collects money from the audience who lost the bet. But a fight with a bulldog almost becomes fatal for White Fang. The bulldog clings to his chest and, without opening his jaws, hangs on him, grabbing his teeth higher and higher and getting to his throat. Seeing that the battle is lost, Handsome Smith, having lost the remnants of his mind, begins to beat White Fang and trample him with his feet. The dog is rescued by a tall young man, a visiting engineer from the mines, Whedon Scott. Opening the bulldog's jaws with the help of a revolving muzzle, he frees White Fang from the mortal grip of his opponent. Then he buys the dog from Handsome Smith.
White Fang soon comes to his senses and demonstrates his anger and rage to the new owner. But Scott has the patience to tame the dog with affection, and this awakens in White Fang all those feelings that were dormant and already half died out in him. Scott sets out to reward White Fang for all that he had to endure, "to atone for the sin of which the person was guilty before him." For love, White Fang pays with love. He also learns the sorrows inherent in love - when the owner unexpectedly leaves, White Fang loses interest in everything in the world and is ready to die. And when Scott returns, he comes up for the first time and presses his head against him. One evening, growls and screams are heard outside Scott's house. It was Handsome Smith who tried unsuccessfully to get White Fang away, but he paid dearly for it. Whedon Scott has to return home to California, and at first he is not going to take a dog with him - he is unlikely to endure life in a hot climate. But the closer the departure, the more worried White Fang, and the engineer hesitated, but still leaves the dog behind. But when White Fang, breaking the window, gets out of the locked house and resorts to the gangplank of the steamer, Scott's heart breaks down.
In California, White Fang has to get used to completely new conditions, and he succeeds. Collie shepherd dog, long annoyed the dog, eventually becomes his friend. White Fang begins to love Scott's kids, he also likes Whedon's father, the judge. Judge Scott White Fang manages to save one of his convicts, the inveterate criminal Jim Hill, from revenge. White Fang gnawed at Hill, but he stabbed the dog with three bullets; in the fight, the dog's hind leg and several ribs were broken. Doctors believe that White Fang has no chance of surviving, but "The Northern Wilderness has awarded him an iron body and vitality." After a long recovery, the last plaster cast, the last bandage, is removed from White Fang, and he staggers out onto the sunny lawn. Puppies crawl to the dog, him and Collie, and he, lying in the sun, slowly sinks into a doze.

White Fang becomes a sled dog. After some time, he is put at the head of the team, which further increases the hatred of his brethren, whom he rules with fierce inflexibility. Hard work in the harness strengthens White Fang's strength, and his mental development is completed. Devotion to man becomes a law for him, and from a wolf-cub born in the wild, a dog is obtained, in which there is a lot of wolf, and yet it is a dog, not a wolf. Seeing that the battle is lost, Handsome Smith, having lost the remnants of his mind, begins to beat and trample White Fang with his feet.

The dog is rescued by a tall young man, a visiting engineer from the Whedon Scott mines. Opening the bulldog's jaws with the help of a revolving barrel, he frees White Fang from the mortal grip of the enemy. Then he buys the dog from Handsome Smith. White Fang soon comes to his senses and shows his new owner his anger and rage. But Scott has the patience to tame the dog with affection, and this awakens in White Fang all those feelings that were dormant and had already half died out in him. Then his new owner brings him to California.

In California, White Fang has to get used to completely new conditions, and he succeeds. Collie shepherd dog, long annoyed the dog, eventually becomes his friend. White Fang begins to love Scott's kids, he also likes Whedon's father, the judge. Judge Scott White Fang manages to save one of those convicted by him, the inveterate criminal Jim Hall, from revenge. White Fang gnawed at Hall, but he stabbed the dog with three bullets; in the fight, the dog's hind leg and several ribs were broken. After a long recovery, all bandages are removed from White Fang, and he staggers out onto the sunny lawn. And soon he and Collie have little cute puppies ...

In the Northern Wilderness, there is an addition to the wolf family. But from the whole brood of a real and brave wolf and Kichi, who is half dog and half wolf, only one cub survived. And all this happened due to the fact that hunger reigned all around. Soon, the father of the wolf cub also perishes when he bravely and courageously fights with a lynx. The fight turns out to be unequal and White Fang's father has a chance to survive.

Now the mother and the little hero of the story are always together, even then she goes hunting. This is how White Fang comprehended the harsh laws of nature and the "laws of prey." He understood that if he did not eat and gnaw at the enemy, then he would have to die himself.

Once on the road, the main character of the work meets people. But he does not try to run away, but decides to defend himself. When they approach him, he simply bites and immediately receives a blow. The mother rushes to the wolf cub, then everyone in her suddenly recognizes Kichi, who fled a year ago. And Kichi obeys the person. Gray Beaver, that was the name of the man, calls White Fang.

It is unbearable for a little cub to get used to life with the Indians. He has a hard time: sometimes, dogs attack, then people punish, showing not only justice, but also cruelty. I realized that you can't bite a person, that punishment will follow. The wolf cub developed quickly, but caused both man and other wolves only with hatred. He was at enmity with everyone, tried to resist everyone. Not knowing what love and kindness are, but at the same time he was not only cunning, but also very agile. White Fang is smarter than the rest, but always fiercely and viciously fought. Nobody could compare with him in this. And all these qualities he needed to survive and survive.

The prisoner also tried to run away when, for example, a person changed the place of his camp. But, left alone, he always felt fear and unpleasant loneliness. And he independently sought out the Indians, so as not to be left alone. Soon he was not only harnessed to the harness, but he became the main one in it. So the wolf cub turned into a sled dog. But other dogs not only envy him, but also hate him. And this work in harness only strengthens his strength. White Fang is well aware of the cruel world he lives in. He does not build any illusions, he understands that nothing will change, but his own laws and rules appear in his life. One such law is devotion. And he, born free, whose father was a wolf, has now turned into a dog.

Gray Beaver goes to Ford Yukon to sell furs and more. So the wolf cub saw white people for the first time. In his opinion, they were even more powerful than the owner. They, according to the wolf cub, were real gods. But white people also turn out to be rude. And the main entertainment remains those fights that local dogs carry out with animals that have found themselves on their territory. But here, too, the wolf cub succeeded. But there is a wicked and greedy person to whom these battles are especially delightful. At first, he carefully observes White Fang, and, having drunk the owner, buys a wolf cub.

Smith among people is pitiful and cowardly, but, trying to subdue a free and strong dog-wolf, he beats him. The wolf cub has to obey, but the hatred for the new owner grows every day. And Smith decides to make money on a new pet and makes him a real professional fighter. Now White Fang constantly participates in dog fights, bringing good money to the new evil and greedy owner. A wolf cub, who is simply mad with hatred, tired of humiliation and beatings, can only show its character in a fight, become strong and free again. He is always a winner.

But the wolf cub lost one fight. The bulldog was bigger and stronger. Immediately he grabbed onto White Fang's chest and gradually crept up to his throat, trying to gnaw at him. The wolf cub had to retreat and surrender. But Smith, annoyed, begins to beat the dog himself and he probably would have killed him if Whedon Scott had not interceded. This young man works as an engineer in the mines. Scott managed to unclench the bulldog's teeth using a revolver, and then he buys a wolf cub from Smith.

When White Fang wakes up, he shows only cruelty, trying to protect himself. But the new owner is kind to him, he treats him kindly and soon those feelings that he had already begun to forget begin to wake up in the frightened creature. Gradually, he gets used to the new owner, and a good friend wanted to atone for the guilt of a man for being so atrocious with this dog. Scott patiently treats the wolf cub, who suffered a lot and for a long time experienced only cruelty towards himself.

White Fang fell in love with the owner, when he leaves, he is no longer interested in anything, he is bored. As soon as the new and kind owner returns, the cub quietly approaches him and cuddles. But at night Scott wakes up to the dog growling. It turned out that Smith wanted to steal the wolf cub, but he was not given to him. And now it's time for Scott to leave for California. He closes the wolf cub in the house and hurries to the steamer. But White Fang breaks the window and rushes after the owner. Scott has to take the dog with him.

In hot climates, the wolf cub has to get used to other conditions, but White Fang is a strong animal: he could even overcome this. A friend appears - Collie, a shepherd dog. He also fell in love with the owner's family: his father, children. He was able to save them from the criminal, although he himself was badly injured: there were three bullets in his body, a broken hind leg and even several ribs. Doctors said: he would not survive, but a strong organism was able to overcome everything. During this time he had puppies.

"White Fang"

The half-breed wolf cub survived after a hungry time in the forest. The old one-eyed wolf-father died in a trot. Now only the mother is with the baby. Unconsciously, the wolf cub immediately grasped the essence of wild life: either you eat someone, or you will be eaten. The still unnamed puppy is full of energy and just enjoys life.

For the wolf cub, a chance meeting with a group of Indians became fateful. It was the first time he saw such strange two-legged animals. A she-wolf rushed up to his screech. And suddenly she crawled to the Indians on her belly, hearing an imperative shout: "Kichi!" She found her former master, Gray Beaver. So the wolf cub was at the mercy of man and acquired the nickname - White Fang.

It is very difficult for a puppy to adapt to life with people whom it perceives as gods. He doesn't get along well with dogs. White Fang has to fight for survival and he grows strong and cunning. In a fight, he proves himself to be a cruel but clever fighter. The owner puts him at the head of the sledding team. Naturally, this did not add love from his partners. On the contrary, the dogs he is tough with hate White Fang. But a loyal dog in a mature half-breed puppy took over the free wolf.

Gray Beaver took up the trade and delivered a load of furs and clothing to Fort Yukon. He was in no hurry to sell the goods. Out of boredom, he exposes Fang to street fights with dogs, placing bets on him. The wolf breed, the harsh conditions of existence have made a half-breed dog the strongest fighter and no one can defeat him. The local villain Handsome Smith became interested in such a dog. He is envious and extremely cruel. Strongly drunk, the Indian yielded to him his best dog.

Smith establishes his supremacy over White Fang with the most severe beatings. The half-wolf is on the verge of insanity. In this state, he comes out victorious over and over again. All the money from the won bets flows into Handsome's pocket. But this did not stop the owner from frenzy, when his dog almost died in a fight with a bulldog, which had a stranglehold on his throat. It was only an engineer from the mines that brought Smith to his senses. Windon Scott with a revolving barrel helps Fang to free himself from the closed teeth of the bulldog. He bought the dog, beaten by the owner, from Pretty Boy.

The engineer had to struggle for a long time with the incredible hatred that the half-breed felt for the people who treated him so cruelly. But Scott is patient and determined with affection to restore Fang's trust in those around him. He succeeds. White Fang felt bitter when the new owner had to leave. I was even ready to die. He fondled a man for the first time when the engineer returned. Once Handsome wanted to steal Fang, but he remembered all the hatred he felt for this man. And Smith had to pay for everything.

Windon Scott has finished all his business and must return to California. He is convinced that the wolf will not be able to adapt to the heat prevailing in the engineer's homeland. But he, having knocked out the window, rushed to the pier, right to the gangway of the steamer. Scott was moved and changed his mind. Fang went with him to California.

There he still managed to adapt. He even made friends with Collie the shepherd. Scott's children have become real close people to him. He saved his father, a judge, from a criminal seeking revenge. Hall he bitten, but he himself was on the verge of life and death from his wounds. But after the school of life that he had to go through in Fort Yukon, White Fang simply could not die. And he survived.
