The night has left the African savannah, giving way to the hot sun. As soon as it rose higher, thousands of animals began to gather in huge herds. And they all moved in the same direction.
Elephants walked sedately one after another, antelopes ran, leopards galloped, giraffes moved their long legs like stilts. All the animals were in a hurry to gather at the king’s home for a special celebration.
Crowding at the foot of the Rock of Glory, the animals saw King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi frozen in anticipation. As soon as everyone gathered, the old baboon Rafiki came forward. All animals respected Rafiki for his wisdom and often called him for important ceremonies.
Calling for silence, Rafiki raised the newborn lion cub high above his head.
- Look at the firstborn of our good King Mufasa! - the baboon exclaimed joyfully.
- This cub will be named Simba and become our prince!
The animals greeted these words with loud rejoicing.
Only one animal did not rejoice - the king's younger brother Scar, he did not even come to the ceremony. Scar was jealous of his brother and wanted to become king himself.
Scar was soon found by the royal advisor Zazu. The bird began to reproach the lion, but in response only a threatening roar was heard.
And suddenly Scar was called out sternly. This is King Mufasa.
“Brother, you upset me,” said the king. - Why didn’t you come to greet my son?
- Forgive me, dear brother, I completely forgot about the ceremony. “I’ll come see you another time,” Scar lied, after which he turned his back to the king and wandered away.
Time passed and the lion king began to take his son Simba with him on walks.
“This whole kingdom is ours, we are completely safe here,” he explained to the baby.
- But never go beyond that mountain ridge - there is great danger behind it.
Just at this time, an alarmed Zazu flew up to the king and reported that hyenas had been spotted nearby. Mufasa told Simba to return home, and he, as the true owner of the domain, rushed to drive away the hyenas.
Simba was very proud of his brave father.
Meanwhile, the insidious Scar had already figured out how to get rid of Mufasa and little Simba in one fell swoop in order to become king himself. To begin with, he decided to lure Simba behind the ridge, where old elephants came to die.
“Only the bravest lions decide to go there,” Scar whispered to Simba and saw that the baby was already ready to go beyond the ridge, despite his father’s warnings.
Scar's calculations were justified - Simba wanted to become the bravest lion. The lion cub invited his girlfriend Nala on a trip.
Zazu, who was looking after the prince, did not know where the cubs were going, and therefore relentlessly flew after them. But the resourceful kids eluded their feathered nanny by hiding in a herd of zebras.
Soon Simba and Nala found themselves far from home, in a cemetery littered with elephant bones.
Suddenly, laughter was heard from the huge elephant skull. Before the lion cubs had time to blink an eye, three evil hyenas jumped out of the skull.
- So, so, what do we have here? - one asked.
“Looks like our breakfast has arrived,” another responded, drooling.
- I... I'm not f-afraid of you, hooligan! - Simba stammered bravely, shielding Nala with himself.
- Did you hear? Breakfast is not afraid of us! - the hyenas giggled.
Baring their sharp fangs, the hyenas moved towards the kids. But before they had time to take even three steps, a powerful paw scattered them to the sides like garbage.
Simba's father, King Mufasa, arrived in time.
He was nearby and when he heard the laughter of hyenas, he decided to find out what was the matter. And he arrived on time! The trio of bullies ran off to lick their wounds, and Mufasa took the cubs home.
Mufasa was a little angry at his son for being disobedient.
“But, dad,” Simba tried to explain, “I just wanted to be brave like you!”
“Everything has its time,” Mufasa responded with a smile. - Someday you, too, will become a king, and you need to learn not only courage, but also wisdom. Look at the stars, Simba. The great kings of the past are there, and they see us. They will always show you the way. And I too will always be with you.
Meanwhile, the treacherous Scar summoned his hyena friends. Scar felt that he was close to his dream of becoming king.
“Stay with me, help me,” he said, “and when I become king, I will save you from hunger!”
One day, seizing the moment when Simba was left alone, Scar said to him:
- Your father prepared a surprise for you and asked me to take you to the gorge.
- Wow! Big surprise? - Simba rejoiced.
“The biggest in the world,” Scar grinned darkly.
Having waited until Simba was at the bottom of the gorge, his villain uncle raised his paw and gave a signal. Seeing Scar's signal, the hyenas drove the herd of antelope straight towards Simba. The frightened lion cub barely managed to climb a dry tree to avoid being trampled.
Hearing his son's screams, Mufasa hurried to his aid. Scar's evil plan began to come true.
The king jumped to the bottom of the gorge to pick up Simba and carry him to safety. And when it seemed to Mufasa that the danger had passed, the stones under his powerful paws suddenly began to crumble.
Seeing his brother nearby, the king called him for help. But Scar just smiled impudently and pushed Mufasa down onto the sharp horns and under the hard hooves of rushing antelopes.
As soon as the herd rushed away, Simba ran up to his father. But he didn’t move anymore. The great king died.
Soon Scar was nearby. He began to look angrily at Simba. After all, the lion cub did not know how his father ended up under the hooves of the antelopes, and blamed himself for everything.
- My father died trying to save me! - Simba lamented.
Yes! - Scar roared.
- If it weren't for you, your father would be alive! What will your mother say?! Go away and never come back!
Confused and grief-stricken, Simba rushed away and did not see the hyenas approach Scar. Simba's uncle gave the order to end the prince's life.
Very soon the fleet-footed hyenas caught up with the lion cub.
And when they were ready to grab him with their sharp teeth, Simba crawled into the thorny bushes.
The hyenas scratched their faces on the thorns for a long time and finally decided to leave. But before leaving, they warned Simba:
- Just try to come back, and we will bite you to death!
Having avoided one danger, Simba found himself faced with another: he did not know where to find food and drink, he could not even hide from the scorching rays of the sun.
He walked all day, and when the sun was already setting, exhausted, he collapsed on the ground unconscious.
Simba finally woke up. For a long time he could not understand where he found himself: instead of a hot desert, he was now surrounded by coolness and greenery. And the most pleasant thing was that there were benevolent creatures nearby.
- We brought you out of the desert! - The little mongoose smiled friendly at the lion cub.
- Maybe you want something to eat? - the pig asked with a wide grin.
The mongoose's name was Timon, and the boar's name was Pumbaa.
They offered Simba a variety of strange dishes to choose from until the baby chose the right food.
From that day on, Timon and Pumbaa began to take care of the cute lion cub and soon became his best friends.
And Simba kept growing. And the day came when he grew into a real young lion.
One night, while the three friends were admiring the stars, Simba remembered his father's words: “The great kings of the past see us. They will always show you the way... and I will always be with you too.”
Simba sighed. He missed his father and mother very much, but could not return, still thinking that he was to blame for his father’s death.
The next day, returning from a walk, Simba heard his friends screaming for help. Pumbaa is stuck among the roots of a tree, and Timon is trying to protect the helpless boar from a hungry young lioness!
Without hesitation, Simba shielded his friends with himself and was knocked over by the lioness. He had just bared his fangs to join the battle when he heard a familiar voice:
- Simba, is it really you?!
The young lioness turned out to be Prince Nala's childhood friend! She also grew up and became big and strong.
Nala told Simba that Scar had become king and kept all the animals in fear, and a gang of hyenas ruled the royal domain.
“You must come back,” Nala assured. - After all, you are our rightful king!
“I can’t,” Simba just sighed sadly.
The young lion could not forgive himself for the death of his father and was afraid to even appear in front of his mother.
However, soon after Nala, the old baboon Rafiki came to the prince. Wise Rafiki pointed Simba to the sky. At first, the young lion did not see anything... But then he discerned the image of his father among the clouds.
- Now you are the king. Your people need you. Come back! - Mufasa commanded from heaven.
And Scar enjoyed power. Although Sarabi the lioness was still queen, Scar treated her no better than the other lions. When the queen protested, Scar used his huge claws.
But one day the rocks shook from a menacing roar. Turning around on the spot, Scar saw a mighty lion in front of him.
- Mufasa? - Scar stammered. - It can’t be, you’re dead!
But the Queen Mother recognized Simba and smiled.
- My son came to save us!
- Go away, Scar! - Simba ordered. - This is my kingdom!
But Scar only grinned.
“Then try to take back your kingdom,” he growled and ordered the hyenas to attack Simba.
They attacked the young lion and forced him to retreat to the very edge of the abyss.
And then Scar, without thinking twice, pushed Simba off the Rock of Glory. When the young lion tried to climb back, Scar said maliciously:
- Ha! Looks like I'll send you to heaven just like your father!
Hearing this, Simba became so enraged that with one mighty jerk he flew up to the Rock of Glory. Scar confessed to killing Mufasa and must pay!
With a furious roar, Simba rushed at the villain and with a strong blow threw the treacherous Scar into the abyss. Meanwhile, Nala and other lions defeated the hyenas. Justice was restored. Simba took his rightful royal place.
Now that life is good again, it's time for the king to choose his queen. Simba knew exactly who would become his wife - the brave and faithful friend Nala.
And Nala, with love and joy, agreed to become the wife of the young king. Simba and Nala gently rubbed their noses together to the joyful cries of those around them.
The great cycle of life returned to its beginning again, and soon the animals gathered to welcome the new prince. Simba and Nala have a son!
And when Rafiki showed everyone the newborn lion cub, everyone realized that happy times had come in the kingdom.

One day Taras came home from school very upset, because the teacher had assigned an unusual homework: to come up with a fairy tale about a lion, tiger, wolf or other forest animal, and the boy thought it was very difficult. In addition, it had to be not just an ordinary story, but a fairy tale for a competition - the winner was promised to be rewarded with an excursion to a large zoo, which Taras had long dreamed of visiting. That is why the boy was sad - he really wanted to win, but doubted his abilities.
At first, he decided to use the help of adults and asked his older sister to write a fairy tale about forest animals instead of him, but the girl was too busy with her own affairs to do this. Then the boy decided to cheat and rewrite the already prepared story - it was for this purpose that he bought fairy tales about lions in the store and began to read them.

This book captured Tarasik from the first pages, because it told interesting stories about these brave and strong animals. In particular, the boy learned that lion cubs are born very tiny and do not know how to roar until they are two years old. This surprised Taras, because he thought that lions from childhood were formidable and brave. The boy immediately forgot that just a few minutes ago he was going to rewrite one of the stories from the book and pass it off as his own. He really wanted to come up with a fairy tale about a lion who learned courage and only after that became the king of animals. Let's see what he did?

The Tale of a Lion: How to Learn Courage

Once upon a time, in a distant and unknown forest, in which forest animals have lived together for centuries, a pack of evil wolves settled. They were completely different from those sweet and kind wolf cubs who lived with everyone else in this forest. Some even said that in fact they were not wolves, but evil werewolf sorcerers. Be that as it may, with their appearance the forest ceased to be as cozy and safe as before, because werewolves offended weak animals, took food from everyone and did other dirty tricks, turning everything around into disorder and chaos. Moreover, some of the animals began to imitate them and became robbers.
Realizing that this could no longer be the case, the forest inhabitants gathered for a council, at which they decided to repel the attackers. But no one knew how to do this, so the animals simply talked about their hard life and went their separate ways. They were not happy with the situation in their home, but they had to endure everything, because there was no one so brave and strong who would dare to lead everyone else.
It is worth saying that when they saw that no one had any ideas on how to overcome the werewolves, the animals resigned themselves and admitted their defeat. Only the little lion cub, who was not even 2 years old, returned home and continued to think about possible steps to solve the common forest problem. Despite his young age, he was already quite strong and dexterous, so he was not afraid of werewolves: he could quickly run away from them, or even stand up for himself. But in addition to strength and dexterity, the lion cub also had a very kind heart: he sincerely sympathized with small animals who could not resist the attackers.

It was his kind heart that prompted him one day to go into the lair of a dangerous company and drive the wolves out of the forest in order to restore its comfort and make it safe even for the weakest animals. Realizing why the lion cub came to them, the wolves began to mock and threaten him. At first the lion cub was upset and already thought about returning home with nothing, but then, remembering how all the forest animals suffer from robbers, he realized that he had to bring the matter to the end. At that moment he became so angry that he growled in a loud voice so that the wolves ran in fear, not understanding what was happening. Of course, the lion cub’s voice had previously been quiet and soft, so no one expected this.
The lion cub returned satisfied and happy: now his native forest will be cozy and safe again.
Hearing this news, the animals were very happy and decided to make the little lion their king.
The Lion Cub accepted this title with gratitude and promised to be a wise, brave and fair ruler who would always protect and protect his subjects.
Since then, life has become even better for forest dwellers.

Taras finished writing and smiled: he was very pleased that he had overcome his laziness and written the fairy tale on his own. And what was his happiness when on the second day it turned out that everyone liked his fairy tale the most and therefore he managed to get to the treasured zoo, where the boy saw the lions with his own eyes. After this excursion, Taras firmly decided to become a writer and invent new fairy tales about lions for children. Who do you dream of becoming? Write about it in the comments.

BOOK ONE

Quentin rode a gray horse with white stockings named Flawless. Black boots to the knees, leggings of different colors, a blue cape embroidered with small pearls and silver, a platinum crown on the head, a sword on the hip - not a ceremonial one, but a real one, suitable for battle. It was ten o'clock in the morning on a cloudy but warm day in late August. The King of Fillory was hunting a magic rabbit.

Riding next to King Quentin was Queen Julia, ahead were the other king and queen, Janet and Eliot: the country of Fillory had always been ruled by four. It was as if a florist had scattered the yellow leaves on the forest path, they lay so beautifully. Each of the four thought about his own, peering into the green thickets of late summer.

There was nothing tense in their silence: why should you be tense if the dream of your whole life has come true?

“Stop,” Eliot commanded, and everyone stopped, only Quentin did not immediately control his mare: he had been in the kings for two years, but had not learned to ride properly.

- What is there? - he asked.

Moments passed, no one was in a hurry. Flawless snorted, expressing contempt for human inventions.

“So it seemed,” Eliot answered.

“I’m beginning to think that it’s impossible to bait a rabbit in principle,” said Quentin.

“A hare,” Eliot corrected.

- I don’t see the difference.

— Hares are larger and live not in burrows, but in nests. Right on the ground.

“Don’t start,” Janet and Julia said in unison.

“What I really want to know is this: If this rabbit really sees the future, doesn’t he know that someone is out to get him?”

“He sees the future, but he can’t change anything,” Julia made it clear. “Did you guys argue like that all the time at Brackbills?”

She is wearing a black Amazon, and the cape and hood are the same. She is always definitely in mourning, it’s not clear just for whom. Casually, as if calling to a waiter, Julia lured a small songbird into her hand and brought it to her ear. The bird chirped something and flew away.

No one noticed this except Quentin: Julia was constantly receiving some kind of information from talking animals, as if from a personal radio network.

“I should have taken Jollibee after all,” Janet yawned, covering her mouth with her hand. Jollibee served as huntsman at White Spire Castle; These kinds of trips, as a rule, were organized by him.

“Even Jollibee is unlikely to be able to track a hare without dogs and without tracks in the snow,” Quentin observed.

“But his calf muscles are well developed.” They look very cute in those tights of his.

“I wear these too,” Quentin pretended to be offended.

“I think he’s still around here somewhere,” Eliot suggested, “just keeping a respectful distance.” Will he miss the royal hunt?

“You have to choose the game carefully, in case you catch it,” said Julia.

Janet and Eliot just looked at each other when they heard her next aphorism, but Quentin understood that in some ways she was right.

He was not always a king - just like everyone else. He grew up in a far from magical Brooklyn, which, despite everything, he still thought of as the real world. Fillory for him then was an imaginary country from children's fairy-tale books; It was only at Brackbills, a secret college for wizards, that they became convinced of its reality.

In fact, it turned out to be a much more dangerous place than in Plover’s books: murders and even more terrible things happened here. After his first encounter with the magical land, Quentin returned to Earth in despair and with white hair, but his friends convinced him to return.
